His Honor, Judge Gilfedder, left by? the Monowai yesterday for Gisbome, where the Appellate Court opens on Monday. Bishop Gibney, after a quarter of a century's charge of the Roman Catholic Church in 'West Australia, has (says a Press Association caole) resigned. Mr. Robert B. Macduff, B.Sc., EJVL, and formerly director of the Karansahake School of Mines, was this morning appointed by the Education Board to the position of mathematical master at the Auckland Technical School. .Mr F. C. Constable, late Auckland manager for the Continental C. and G. Company Propjy'Ltd, left last evening by the s.s. Maheno for Sydney and Melbourne, expecting to proceed'to Europe on business for his Company. He will be absent for some considerable time. Dr. R. B. S. and ; Mrs. Smith were entertained at a farewell social in the Foresters' Hall, Coromandel, last evening. Mr. S. James, county chairman, on behalf of the public of Coromandel, presented Dr. Smith -with a handsome, illuminated address, and Mrs. Smith -with, a solid silver afternoon tea set. - At a large and representative gathering of the Auckland Fire and Marine Underwriters, held yesterday in the Fire Association's rooms, Mr G. iNi Pierce,-who has recently retired from the local management of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Limited, was presented by tTie chairman (Mr. Horace Walker), on behalf of the members, witn a Handsome solid silver salver, suitably inscribed. Mr. Pierce thanked the members in a few well chosen words. Dr. Stopford entertained his hydro staff at a farewell dinner at the Royal Hotel last night, the guests numbering 16. Beside each cover was a silver serviette ring, engraved .with the initials of the guest, the farewell gift of Dr. Stopford. During the evening Dr. Stopford was presented with a surgical ba<* and fittings by the staff, and -in. his reply he referred to the harmony which ■had always'existed between himself- and the staff, and to the efficient manner in which they had carried out their ■duties. Mulgan, M.A., was this morning appointed by the Auckland Education Board to the position of chief inspector of schools in the district. Mr. Mulgan. holds the "Al" classification, the highest in the service, which he entered in 18S6, becoming an inspector under tie Auckland Board in IS9B, a position which 155 held until the 'beginning of 1906, when he left to take up la. similar appointment in North 'Canterbury. He is a man of high scholastic and academic qualifications, having graduated in the New Zealand University in 1895, and in .the following year he obtained first-class honours in Natural' Science. "He • also went through, the course for the B.Sc. degree in Chemistry and Physie3, and did work in Botany and Biology.
