AUSTRALASIAN DEFENCE.
KITCHENER'S IMPRESSIONS. THE TRAIN-NO PERIOD. LONDON, April 28. LoTd Knollys (representing His Majesty the King), Lord Roberts, Sir George Koid, and others, welcomed Lord Kitchener at Waterloo railway station. Lord Kitchener, in an interview, said he was very pleased with what he saw in Australia and New Zealand. Asked if he thought the period of training provided under the Australian and New Zealand Defence Acts was sufficient, Lord Kitchener replied: "I do not think you must cross-examine mc on that point. I can only say, as I said in my reports, that Australia and New Zealand have splendid material with which to make an army."
Questioned as to whether exception is being taken in Australia and New Zealand to the cost entailed by compulsory training, Lord Kitchener replied: "No. The sums are surely not large, and prosper-as countries like Australia and New Zealand will find that they can bear fha cost very well."
