_ chorus girl, engaged at Daly's Theatre, as she dec—red, answered a judgment summons at Bloc—-bury County Court, Londou, in respect to the non-payment of £50 due as rent _tr a country cottage.
The debtor said she 'lived in Je_aynstreet ■with her sisters. She offered to pay the money now c_imed three years ago. hut it was not accepted. The •Solicitor: The fact is. you flashed the amount in the face of the creditors. Yon merely offered it by way of bravado. The Debtor: I offered to pay it. I took it down to. -them, but they wanted £60. The rent was in respect of a cottage at Taplow, hut the chorus girl explained that she did not rent it. She was only security for the rent, tbe actual tenant being an actress whom, she added, —1c plaintiffs had j not tried to find. That _dy became ill, and had to give up the corttase because it was damp- , The «o_citor: Where is she"; The Chorus! Ctrl: She is married now, a_d very "well off. Judge Bacon: But the husband won't pay her debtsr (Laughter.) ' The Solicitor: We wHI get her as well. Judge Bacon: She is a married woman; (Laughter.) The Debtors' Act does not apply. She has changed her name, -though women frequently change their names without being married. (Laughter.) The fact that a person] lives in Fulham or Chelsea is no evidence of means. The Solicitor: In lermyn-street? Judge Bacon: Worse and worse! {Laughter.) The chorus girl, in answer to the judge, said she earned £2 a week. Is ——t all a chorus girl is paid?—lf she has a beam—ful voice she may get £3. Judge Bacon made an order for 10/ a month. To" —fale solicitor he said: "Why do you trust these little 'Bone—i_—; with a cottage for £50? They cannot pay it honestly."
