THE LABOURER AND HIS HIRE
f ENFORCING AWARDS. '' At Court this morning, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., J. H. Adams, engineer, Albert-street. Auckland, was proceeded- against on a charge of having discharged an apprentice named ,G. Vowell owing to slackness oi work, and failed to procure him another employer, 25 required by clause S of the award. Mr. R. T. Bailey. Inspector of Awards, appeared for the Department, and ]\lr. Zkaait for defendant.. _ .from the evidence, it appeared that the Isd started •with Price at the 'Thames, next -with Koiiand and (lillett. and then with Adams. I'or the defence, it was denied that "Vowll was employed as an apprentice. Lifter-hearing tlip-witnesses, his Worship said he was satisfied that tbe lad was taken on by Adams as an apprentice- - in a slipshod manner, perhaps; but the ■whole transaction amounted substantially to a transfer under the award. It was i' tted- 4J?a-t the award did not provide for a writte.n memorandum of these transfers. Defendant ■wus fined £5 'Vit"i costs.
There was another information against J. H. Adam?, for having fuiled to pay an- apprentics named V. L. Binns the award rate of wages. Mr. Ziman, who appeared for the defendant, admitted that the lad had not been pa id full J> but said lie had been away from work, and it ■nits tkouffht advisable to put a stop to the matter. His Worship thought the ease might fairly come under -section 16, and dismissed the information. Boys must realise, that they could not go and come when they liked. They inn^t , be diligent, and make work the first call on their time.
