NO-LICENSE v. PROHIBITION.

At St James' Hall last night Mr. W ! Richardson addressed a small audience on the topic upon which he is most keen at I *T>-_bition l v. No-license." '___ J. E. Taylor presided. Mr. Richardson was at some pains last night ■to show that no-license did not necessarily, nor, In fact, make for diminution in the drinking habits of the people, and that the Alliance in support— local option, - had sacrificed' their former principles of bare majority and national option. Incidentally he indulged in some gratuitous personalities, which he himself miscalled plain speaking. In response to Mr. R—ha—son's challenge, Mr. R. French .toot .the platform to defend the attitude of the Alliance. He Was not accorded a very good bearing, however, the audience being obviously with Mr. Richardson. A vote was taken on ' the issue, of No-license v. Prohibition, and the latter proposal was carried by a large majority. ST. ANDREW'S SOCIETY. '

There was a good attendance at the Choral Hal last night, when a concert aud social gathering -was held' under the auspices of the St. Andrew's Society The programme included vocal items, selections by the pipe band, Scotch dances, and gramaphone selections. A brief address was delivered by the chairman (Mr Meunle) and refreshments were provided a most enjoyable evening being spent by all present. ~, . *^
