The pro- j , portion .of youths employed shall not j be more than one to every five or frac-1 tion of five men fully employed. The' claim for labourers employed at dirty I ■work is 1/- per day extra as "dirt • _o_ey." * i The Colonial Sugar Company (represented by Mr H. V. - Miller), the Kauri . Timber Company (by Mr T. H. White) and the Wa__ Gold Mining Company ('by •Mr C. G. Knox) applied for, and were granted, exemption, on the ground that they were already working under separate awards which covered all class— of labour employed 'by them. John .•" Chambers and Son (represented by Mr Grosvenor) claimed exemption only as regards storemen employed by them; -this wus granted. Mr S. Parker, for the Southern Cross Ironworks, Company, applied for, and obtain;ed, exemption by general consent. Mr Wilson, for the Portland Cement Company, Ltd., asked that a. clause ibe inserted to the effect that only la/bourers employed by them to assist engineers should- come under the award: this was agreed to. The Auckland Gas Company (represented by i— Grosyonor) asked to .be struck out from the dispute, but as they admit—d employing la'bo—__ in assisting engineers in outside work exemption was not granted. -John Wallett, iron and steel maker, imed exemption, and was struck out by general concent. The Auckland Harbour Board (-represented by Mr T. H. Ham:er) claimed exemption, bat as they admitted employing iblaeksmrfchs' labourers they "were retained as parties to the dispute. The further hearing of the case was adjourned till 'Tuesday, April 26, owing to the engagements of the Commissioner preventing him hearing it at an earlier date. It was agreed that when the Council sits again the conference of delegates from the firms cited and from the Union shall ,be held, and the hope -was expressed that an ami—.hie settlement would be arrived at. At the dose of the proceedings, Mr O. J—-son moved, and Mr G. Fraser seconded, a vote of condolence with Mr T. V. Masefield on the death, of his mother. The motion was carried in silence, and the Commissioner was requested to convey the resolution to Mr Masefield.
