His Majesty the King is suffering from a cold, and is remaining indoors. First Lieutenant Filchner's expedition to the Antarctic is to leave Germany in the summer of 1911. The Dalai Lama inspected Calcutta factories, the Zoological Gardens, and bioscope exhibitions, and is now going to DarjeeUng. A number of settlers from New Zealand yesterday made inquiries in tho Brisbane Lands Office with a view to taking up land on the Jimbour Estate. The by-election for the Brunswick seat in the Victorian Assembly resulted in the return of Mr. Jewell (Labour), defeating the Ministerialist candidate by a large majority. Warnings for a severe tropical disturbance along the Queensland coast have been issued, and a gale is blowing at Townsville. Nearly seven inches of "rain have fallen at Mackay. Mr. Rufus Isaacs, who was recently appointed Solicitor ; Genera] in succession to Sir Samuel Evans, who has been made a judge and a Privy Councillor, has received the honour of knighthood.
