The "tramp" who spends an his- time -touh dering over the country is one of the bestknown characters in modern, life outelde the large towns, but It is not often that a case crops up of a man taking turns of home life and turns of tramping. This, however, seems to have been the kind of existence which Matthew Malr, of Partick, Scotland, has led for some time back. Matthew Malr is ■by profession a quarrier; ihe is 51 years of age, and Ibis home is In Partick. He was before Bailie Rae at Edinburgh. Police Court charged • with, having stolen a cashbox, a. savings-bank book, and £1 9/6 in money from his- own house on the 22nd January. . (The box, .the book, and the money were the property of his son, and Malr pled guilty to the charge of stealing them. , " .
Mr Jeans, the fiscal, explained that-ac-cused was in the habit of periodical wanderings through the country,- rambling anywhere, living as best he could, and sometimes disappearing from his wife and family for over a year. Before going away he usually stole something, and he- had been previously convicted of theft. When his -wandering was over for the time being he came back to his home and settled down again—for a time. Mair, who was apprehended In a Glasgow model the previous day by'•'Detective-In-spector Macaskill, said that he proposed to go to Kosyth. on the expiry of his sentence for the offence- -with, which lie- was charged He was sent to prison for 30 days, .without option, . • ' —
