HOUSE AKD TEAVELLETG EX-! PESSESi ' ' '.' ->\ : ~\ ,*igAßipcS ISCBEASSS MA32K, ;U As the result of consideration jsj , C&'rahet, the Government has resolved fe :J make same: alterations in—the "scale .of. • 4»ouse 7 a^d 7 -->t*a,'»e3lmg allowances : : 4an- ; necrion with tie Police Department: Hitherto married sergeants who were sot provided with quarters received house allowance- of 10/6 a week, and married constables who were not provided with a^ar&rs-Received 7/ a week. The rates. j? *a£Sgiasßl -be. sergeants-. 14/- a. -weekj and constables 10/6 a week—that is to say, an' increase in each case 3/6 per week. The increase, however, will be granted only in the four centres. Dr. -Jmdlayshas.iad a return prepared i ing_ the reals paid . hy-aH. married constables and sergeants* and a comparison: of the rent* actually paid shows that j the rents are higher in the four cities j than in the outside districts, or, to put j it in-another way, .that', generally speaking, cheaper and better living accommodatioii can "be found in tie out-districts than in the four centres. The increases made will fairly equalise tie real wage. As regards travelling allowances/ Dr. Kndlay says that tie principal complaints that have -been made are that sergeants and constables received only 6/ a day, white detectives received 8/ a day, also that 6/ was not sufficient at the present day to enable a rrra-n to travel without loss. Both these complaints, he admits, were fairly -well founded. Under tie new scale, the rates wfll be as —Inspectors and sub-inspec-tors, 12/6 (no alteration); station sergeants and sergeants, 10/ (previously 6/) ; chief detectives, 10/ (previously 8/); detectives and acting-detectives, 9/ (previously 8/) constables, 8/ (previously 6/). Dr. Kndlay has not been able to make other than'an approximate estimate of the cost of these alterations; but he has every- reason to believe that their cost will be more than counterbalanced by economies in. other directions, which have either been carried out or are in contemplation, The changes, win' take effect from.April l.nest, and.Dr,Jindlay believes that .they will give great satisfaction to the force as a whole.
