Seven thousand tramwaymen struck in Philadelphia at an hour's notice to-day, alleging the unfair dismissal of 700 of their comrades. Scenes of violent rioting followed the , strike, and a total of 297 cars were wrecked, many being burned. I All the available police were called out, and the authorities made every effort ito end the riot, but the mob was quite ! out of hand, and the police had to draw their revolvers and fire upon the rioters. Women joined in with the mob in destroying the tramway property, and during the firing two girls were shot. The Riot Act was enforced, and order was restored after 3000 extra police had been enrolled.
