This small tonnage is owing i-o being delayed in starting the battery on account of connecting up the new mill plant re<?entiy installed. The cosU for the past month are heavier than usual, as a thorough, overhaul of ■the mill and mine ma-chinery was carried out during the stoppage or 20 days. Ihe eo=rts were 04/5, made up as follOTvs: development 22/6, mining 18/1, milling 19/11, general 3/11. A Press Association cable from London, dated February 6th, gives quotations as follow: —Waihi, buyers £9 16/3, sellers £9 IS/9; Waihi Grand Junction, buyers 26/3, sellers 27/6. With regard to Grand Junction shares, a private cable received in Auckland in response to an inquiry for shares elicited ihe reply yesterday: —"No sellers under 29/6." the 6th would be really last Saturday's quotations. The mine superintendent's report for the four weeks ending December 25ti states that at No. 4 level, No. 2 winze on No. 6 lode "C" west is now close to the footwall, and showing good ore. Tlie tonnage produced was 56 tons of low grade. No. 1 winze, Martha lode, has connected with the rise from No. 5 level. At No. 5 level the total width of the Martha lode is 57ft. The quartz is of low grade. No. 4 lode, drive east, from 329 ft to 357ft—the value of the ore was £2 la/1 per ton, after that the value was low. In the drive west, this lode averaged' £1 18/ per ton. The Royal lode, in the drive east, was a mixture of stringers and bands of country rock. For a width of 2Sin the average value was £3-6/5. The face now shows considerable improvement, as the quartz is wider and more compact. A crosscut at 80ft further east shows the reef to consist of quartz and country rock. The tonnage produced was 80 tons, value £1 1/7 per ton. The Royal lode, drive west, shows a value of £1 12/0 for a width of 38in. A width of 55in, stripped from the footwall of the lode to 45ft west from the main crosscut, gave an average value of £1 10/7. PHOENIX. On Friday last the Directors visited the property for the purpose of inspecting the developments recently undertaken, and were highly pleased. From the shafc which was put down in the centre of a very large reef formation over 100 feet wide, a drive was put in for 100 feet and then a cros=scu-t over 80 feet- to endeavour to ascertain the width, but no walls were met with. From this reef formation a trial crushing of 13 tons gave £5 13/ per ton. Tli is enormous reef formation runs right across the property. At the other end of the Phoenix property and nearly three-quar-ters of a mile away from the shaft a joint level has ibeen put in by the Phoenix and Dreadnought Gomipaniea, which has been driven 400 feet and will -be extended another 150 feet to get under a very large outcrop to which it will give 400 feet oi backs. In the other direction work don° by the Great Mexican upon a reef formation (whicli is practically identical with ore crushed from the Phoenix reef in the shaft) has resulted in about 100 tons of nice looking sulphide ore .being obtained and stacked ready for treatment. This property is fully half a mile from the Phoenix shaft, thus showing that the reef formation has been proven over a mile and a-half of country. The three properties are under option to an Australian firm. It is a proposition that requires a large plant and capital for its development. The Government Geologist and staff have made a preliminary inspection of these properties and they will be explored and reported upon by them fully in their geological report of this section, and there is no doubt this report will be of very great importance and interest to the mining community generally.

MIKE JIAXAGEK.S' REPORTS. Imperial.—The Empire reef south averages 3ft In width, made up of branches, leaders 6in and 12in 5n thickness, with sandstone between. At present there Is every appearance of them coming together. A small crosscut was put into the foot\vf.ll, and about four different leaders were cut. Jiagmet.—ln the drive north there Is sandstone between the h-.vnglnswall ftud the footwall of the main reef. The hnnjjing--nall is unbent lft in width, ajid at last breaking , dowD coloui's of gt>l<l were seen. The footwall averages 2ft in thickness of heavily mineralised quartz. Pride of Tokatea.—Two sto-pes are in progress on the cross lode. The country shows the right class of mineral indications, and the lode In places is strong. 6<>lbs of picked stone were won from the reef during the week. MounataiarL—The rise is now tip STft. Some of the quartz looks promising, but so far no gold has been seen. Golden Belt. —In the drive south, a new reef was cut in the liauglngwall. It has been cut into 4ft, with no sign of the footwall. 'Phis reef should junction with the one driven on towards the Bluffs.

iMiranui.—The Hl.vth level Is now In 146 ft In the western shaft the lcxle has tjpllt into two bodies. The hanging wall is 2ft wide, nnd the footwall l~>in. It is from tlie latter that The mineralised stone is got. Mount Zeehan.—ln the north end face the reef still retains encouraging nppenranees la the south € nd workings the winze is down 3ft. aud a few pounds of good picked stone were obtained. The rref is over wide, and, apart from rich gold, is carrying very rich sulphides. Un ju-esent appearances, sinking this winze promises to be an important development.

Kurangahuke.—The drive on tile big reef is in 33ft from the crosscnt. The centre portion of the lode Is the most favourable looking quartz. The reef at this point : d 10ft wide, and the quartz for 31ft in the centre is not so flinty aa it is in the western or eustern side.

Silver Hill.—Trenching Is sIIH lieing continued in this mine, but, so fnr, no reef lias been met with. The surveyors are here laying off a low level on Xos. 1 and 2 reefs. «uU are turveyinff to see If NO3. i and v reefs are cut in any of the other levels, as there is a winze eunk on Xo. 5 reef which gives good values.

New Comstock.—No. 2 level Is In 31fift. The country is still of a very favourable nature, with strong quartz veins, heavily mineralised, in tue face. The Waverley level has been repaired through, to the boundary. At 350 ft from tlie mouth a winze has been Bunk, and a small leading stope taken out, which appears to have been, in the run of gold.

Rising Sun.—The rontract iias been finished, and a fresh one let. The drive is now in a distance of C37ft. The contractors have driven 10ft in the main drive, and have timbered It up where necessary. The country has improved slightly.

Crown Royal.—The branch reef has been cut through, and proves to he between 6 and 7ft wide. It is In clean sandstone. The race is now squared up, and ready to let in contract. The men are opening out to the north on the main reef. For the last 2Sft driven 21ft of q-.iartz hnve been passed through. Some fair assay results were obtained.

Golden Pnh.—The winze Is down 12ft. The quartz looks well, having much the same appearauoe as wueu the picked stun"; above was being obtained. The drive on Jlacdonald's leader was extended stt last "week. Tie country Is rather tight to break, owing to a number of mineral veins crossing , the face. The leader is looking very promising on the wall.

May Queen. —The hangtngwall branch, leader at No. 6 level contluues to look well, and the quartz broken sho-ws gold at each breaking down. The leading Etope has been brought forward, and the level timbered to within a few feet of the face. Gold hns beea seen pretty freely in the quartz broken, while a few pounds of picked stone hays also been selected. The quartz from the second slope also shows gold. Stoping is proceeding as usual on the footwall branch of No. 4 lode, with favourable results, the quartz won occasionally yielding a little picked stone. Champion.—The drive to cut the Britannia reef Is in 71ft. After passing through the large flinty and quartz formation, nice sandstone was met, but only lasted a few feet, when a more disturbed class of eotintry was penetrated. The manager tainks that the formation passed through will prove to be the Britannia reef, with a slight deviation in its course.

Scotia.—The ore being won from the slopes looks "well, showing a fair amount of sulphide.

Old Alburnla.—Dixon'e reef at the Xo. 6 level averages three feet in wlrlth. A. portion of the miuerullsed stone assayed £3 6/10 per ton. Iα the drive, Dlson's east, Djson's reef is a good body of ore, but do values have been got so far.

Wakatere. — A. well defined body of stnno lias been cut In the New Zealanuer section In a splendid class of country. iloewai. —In the prospecting drirs the reef gives a few colours of gold In the dleh liount Welcome.—The low leTel is In 25oft. The reef is of fair size, and looking well.

Victoria. —The qtrartz coming to hand from tlie stopes n'boye Xo. 1 level coiitiniies to show a little gold, nnd the country Is of a good description. The «?inze b<?law Xo, 8 l<rrd le do-ira 53ft. ot tk<! r»ef Slia tw

Common-wealth.—The low level Is In 30 feet, and penetrating firmer sandstone country. Southern Queen. —The reef has been broken down In each of the three "sinks." Colours of gold were seen In one place. Tokatea.—ln the crosscut, after passing through a slide, a three-Inch leader was cut. Although a little gold was seen, the manager concluded this was not the hanglngwall leader, and started to drive north and south on the slide. Quartz is making In both faces and carries prospects of gold. Bonanza.—The low level Is in 91ft Small stringers and mineral veins have been paesed thro gh freely. Halcyon.—The drive on the break Is In 167 ft. Another 30ft should cut the reef. Ooromandel, Liza. —This drive is near the top of the spur, and Is about 100 ft above the present low level. The reef here continues to give fair dlsli prospects, and an occaslonnl stone has been met with showIng strong colours of sold.
