RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUES

AT BIRKENHEAD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I intend to vote against the above named proposal, one reason being that the Colonial Sugar Company, which is a wealthy monopoly, has for the past 25 years held in the centre of Birkenhead a large block of land in ti-tree, which has blocked settlement. If the proposal is carried the company will have no rates to pay on the warehouses and machinery, and will be reduced in rates over £100 per annum, which will U placed oa the backs

of the struggling fruitgrowers; -who will have to pay increased rates to the amount of about £125. Mr. King, secretary of the Single Tax League, states that this is fair. I maintain that it is most unjust, and I am sure that the majority of the ratepayers will agree with mc and defeat Mr. King and his Single Tax fads. This question was fought out nine years ago, when Mr. King and his supporters were defeated.—l am, etc, FAIR PLAY.
