ALMOST A WRECK.

SYDNEY, February 4. A four-masted barque, from the West Coast of America, narrowly escaped striking the Middleton Reef, a treacherous low-lying reef about 300 miles off the N.S.W. coast, and 130 miles north of Lord Howe Island. For eight days, while approaching the coast, the barque was buffeted by incessant gales. When day broke one morning the ship was close on to the reef, and the officer on duty had barely time to swing her clear and get into safe water.
