RACING NEWS.

TAKAPTOTA JOCKEY CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. ■UNFAVOTJRABtrE WEATHER. The Tabapuna. Jockey Club's Summer Meeting opened on Saturday in most unfavourable weather. When racing commenced it was showery, but, after the first race, rain set in, and continued without cessation until the last race wae run, when it stamped. The course and surrutirdings became very sloppy, but the track was in much better condition than would be imagined under the circumstances, and stood the racing well. Notwithstanding the unpleasant conditions under which the racing was conducted, the attendance was large, while the sport was of a fairly interesting character, the Takapuna Cup in particular providing an exciting finish, Uranium just snatching a victory by half a head from Wauchope. Since last meeting several improvements have been effected to the course, the most noticeable being two up-to-date number boards, and a new railing round about half the track. The number boards In particular were greatly appreciated, and can be seen , from every point, of the course. Mr W. J. Ralph officiated as judge, Mr S. Kohn as timekeeper, and Mr C. O'Connor as starter, the Latter gentleman being very successful with his dispatches. With 6uch adverse circumstances to contend with, due allowance could be made had any hitch occurred in the arrangements, but the afternoon's sport was conducted by the secretary (Mr R. Wynyard) and the various officials In a manner that left absolutely no room for complaint. THE TOTALISATORS. The lain affected speculation to some extent, but the falling off in the totaltsatora' investments was not nearly as large as generally expected, and during the afternoon the staff of Messrs W. Blomfield and Co. handled the ran of £8522, which Is a decrease of £194!) 10/ on the corresponding day last year. In addition, thirty-five bookmakers paid a license fee of £15, the fees from this source amounting to £525. THE RACING. - The opening event, the Maiden Plate, attracted a field of nine, Waipa being made a better favourite tban Prince Lea The winner turned up in Fuss, which won nicely from Spectre end the favourite, and credited her owner with a long overdue victory. Minstrel was the only defection from the two-year-old event, tile Calliope Handicap, leaving nine to face the barrier. Solus waa made a strong favourite, and put up a good light, but had to succumb at the Unlsh to Wenonah, a well grown filly by Spalpeen, which w:is badly placed in the early stages, but finished up her task In great style. Wenonah is the first of Spalpeen's stock to race.

Backers made no mistake in selecting Waiari as favourite in the Zealandia Handicap, which attracted a field of ten, the son of St. Paul being practically in front throughout, winning very easily at the finish.
