FIRE IN QUAY-STREET.

BLAZE IN HAIRDRESSER'S SHOP.

Quay-street in the early hours of Sunday morning was the scene of a conflagration, which, but for the watchfulness of Mr. R. Shepherd, the Harbour Board's watchman, might have had far more disastrous consequences than was actually the case. Mr. Shepherd was going his rounds between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Sunday when he noticed a blaze in the window of Mr. James McNamara's tobacconist's and hairdressing establishment in Kndean's buildings. He rapidly raised the alarm, and the brigade was quickly on the spot. The brigade was successful in extinguishing the outbreak before a great deal of damage was done. The window, with its contents, of course, is destroyed, but the shop is only slightly damaged by water, whilst the hairdressing saloon is intact, so that Mr. McNamara is able to carry on his business as usual. The shop forms part of Endean's Buildings, which are insured for a large sum. Mr. McNamara's fittings and stock are insured in the United Office for £200.
