TRAGEDY NEAR NEWCASTLE.

NEWCASTLE, January 20. A tragedy occurred at New Burwood this morning, when a man, William Naylor, was found dead, with a 'bullet wound in his temple, and a woman, Sarah Ellen Fawkes ? was discovered with a wound in the neck, and in an apparently dying condition.

No outside person seems to have witnessed the shooting, but the woman Fawk'ea has made a statement to the police",' in which she alleges that about 10 a.m. to-day the deceased put his arm round her neck, and asked her to go and live with him again. She refused, and she then saw that Naylor had a revolver in his hand. He shot her in the neck, and she sank to the-floor. Naylor then wont into a front room, and the report of a shot was heard.

Mrs. Fawkes says she then fainted away. She was subsequently found lying on the floor in a pool of blood, and in a very weak etafe. Dr. Scott Patoa was summoned, and Naylor was then found quite dead. Mrs. Fawkes was removed to the Newcastle Hospital. Naylor, who was 50 years of age, was a colliery deputy, residing at Kurri Ku-rri. He is said to have been a married man with a family, but was living apart from his wife. Mrs. Fawkes is also married, with a family, and is likewise living apart from her husband. The deceased bad known the woman for some time, and they had lived together, but parted for some reason. No doubt the refusal of the woman to go back to Naylor resulted in the shooting.
