SHELLY BEACH.
A POPULAR RESORT. i BATHS URGENTLY REQUIRED. Probably the most popular summer afternoon and evening resort in, Auckland is Shelly Beach, at Ponsonby. It is satfe to say that no other spot in the city or suburbs is so thronged with people. Night after night upwards of 2000 persons are congregated at this epot, and these include hundreds of bathers •who come from all parts of the city for a ewisn. There are always two police ! officers on duty there. Despite the facts jus:t enumerated, however, it is singular that next to no accommodation is provided for bathers at the spot where the finest ibathing in Auckland is to be had. Such accommodation as is provided is totally inadequate, consisting, ac it does, of a small shed capable of holding some 25 persons! The City Council has been approached more than ones in the matter, but nothing has so far been done. It is understood that the Ponsonby Swimming Club intend to approach the Council again, and "that they will offer to build suitable 'bathe provided they can obtain a suitable lease. The Club, which ia the .biggest in Auckland, ia at present teaching some 90 ladies to swim each evening. There can be no doubt that.
