There came before tiie City Council at the meeting last night! a letter from Dr. Purdy, District .Health O&eer m which he suggested -to the Oouncil the advisability of dealing uiider section 293 of "The Municipal Corporations Act," with the area comprising Duke, Dock, and Hardinge streets, and aiso in the area embracing Cook, Morton, and Baker streets. Owing to the construction of these streets the areas named were, in the opinion of the Health Officer, insanitary. The section of the Acf referred to gives the Council power to acquire compulsorilv the areas referred to, to pull down the buildings erected t&ereon, to lay theareis out afresh, and otherwise make sue* alcerations as will make their condition sanitary. Mr. C. J. Pferr remarked that it was time the Council took over such streets, paid faar compensation, widened them, and let the land on either side. That could be done without loss to the ratepayers. Mr. G: Rekd said for a try, some of the houses were a disgrace. Mr. W. A. Thompson argued that there were no real .slums in Auckland. If fhey widened the Streets and put up better dwellings, the question was whether the popla could pay the higher rente for the new nouses.
