OBITUARY.
DE. BERNARD C. BF.ALF. After having reached the advanced age lof 79 years, one of Auckland's most respected citizens, Dr. Bernard C. Beale, died at his residence, Avondale, on Sunday. Some 20 years ago, deceased wa3 a prominent figure in connection with the Liberal party in Auckland and the Waikato. He was born in London in 1830, and educated at tho London Hospital Medical College, ln IS4S he was appointed medical officer to the London Board of Health. Having passed his fllnaj medical examination in 133_, Dr. Beale visited Demarara and other places in the West Indies. Later on he was medical officer on the Earl of Balcarras, which "•arried troops to Bombay in the same year. In 1861, Dr. Beale arrived in New Zealand, his tirst appointment being --hat of surgeon at the Nelson Hospital, which position he held for three years. Dr. Beale then came on to Auckland, and resided for close on a quarter of a century in the Waikato, making his headquarters most ot the time at Hamilton, being a member of 'the first Borough Council, and subsequently Mayor of that borough. Dr. Beale al-o held a commission in the militia for a number of years. He was promoted to Lieut.-Oolonel Surgeon in ISS7, and placed on the retired list of officers in 1905. Later on Dr. Beale removed to Auckland and practised his profession in the Ponsonby district for a number of years. At that time he took considerable interest in political questions. Retiring from practice on account of advancing years, Dr. Beale went to reside at Rose Bank, Avondale, where he enjoyed good health, but last Sunday, while sitting on the balcony in front "of his house, he fell down, became unconscious, and died shortly afterwards. Deceased leaves a widow and five eons and three daughters.
