NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS.

j ■ ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors was held in the Chamber of Commerce to-day. Mr. .J. E. Fulton, President, was in the chair, and there were some twenty mem- ' bers present. Annual Report.—The report made mention of the fact that the Council of the Institute had made representation to the Government re the insufficiency of the existing scale of charges relating to the survey of native lands, and the altogether unsatisfactory mode of payment by liens over the lands dealt with. In response to these representations the Under-Seeretary for Lands had had a • memorandum addressed to the chief sur- ! veyors of the Dominion on the subject, ! and he had expressed the opinion that he thought the result would be thatmuch more satisfactory rates would be , fixed for private surveyors. The Council had also approached the Government . with a suggestion that, in the interests of the surveyor and without inconvenience to the public, a surveyor might be notified when a plan was ready for approval, in order that he might then suggest that, in the event of the fee 3 being still unpaid, the desired approval , might be withheld at least until a dealing was lodged affecting the plan. In reply, the Surveyor-General had issued an instruction that plans should not be approved without surveyor's consent unless under pressure or threat of legal proceedings. The report was adopted after brief comment.
