AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.

THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE SITE The announced intention of the Government to devote the site of Government House to the requirements of a new University College in Auckland has been received.on all hands with approval The whole site will be used, including the paddock known as the Metropolitan Grounds. A year or two ago a preliminary step was taken in this connection by the purchase of the.Choral Hall. It has been felt for many years that this site should be used for the purposes of the University.

It is understood that a sum will be placed on the Estimates for the building of the new college to supplement the amount derivable from the national endowment. With" respect to the endowment rents the Prime Minister states that it is-proposed to-allocate, the money on a provincial basis, ourth of the total revenue being applied to university requirenients. It is not probable that the present Government House will be used as part of "the new college, owing to the age of •the building. It is extremely unlikely that a new Government House will be .provided for sometime to come.
