PERSUASIVE COMMITMENT ORDERS. In the county courts of England and Wales during 190S the sum of £2.5ir>,:>38 was recovered from debtors, and of this amount was paid out to creditors. This aud a mass of other information is contained in a Blue-book concerning the work of the county courts last year.
The persuasive effect of the conimitmenl crder is illustrated in one series of tnMes. For insta.ice, at Westminster County Court the time of hearing this number had dwindled to 2062. Of these cases 1411 resulted in the issue of commitment orders. When the rime for the issue of warrants of arrest arrive.! the 1411 bad dwindled to 54: , ..

In City of London Court the judgiue:.: summonses were 2910, the commitment sum
monses 5-6. the warrants 3.' tO, the arrests 1113, aud the imprisoned debtors who served the full sentence in default of payment only three. There were eighteen at Bright on who went to prison, thirteen at Hastincs. thirty at Portsmouth, eleven from Lambeth, none from Windsor, fifteen from Shoreditch. From Bloomsbury three went to prison, and from Whitechapel only two, while from Mnrylebone and West Brompton respectively twenty-five and twenty-six
