(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) \ (Received 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 28. ; The Australians commenced their match against Sussex at Brighton today. The weather was bright, but the wicket Was soft. Following were the teams:.— Sussex.—C. L. A. Smith (captain), R. B. Heygate, p. Cartwright, R. A. Young, J. Vine, E. H. Killick, A. E. Relf, R. Relf, G. Leach, J. H. Vincett, and H. R. Butt. Australia.—M. A. Noble (captain), V. Trumper, 8. E. Gregory, A. J. Hopkins, V. Ransford, P. A, McAlister, W. W. Armstrong, W. Carkeek, R. Hartigan, W. J. Whitty and J. A. O'Connor. Smith won the toss, and decided to bat, opening with R. Relf and Vine. The opening was disastrous, the first ball of the match; bowled by Whitty, being fatal to Relf, who lifted it into the hands of Hartigan at second slip. Young came next, and the wioket proved very tricky. Both Vine and Young were frequently beaten without, being bowled. Their dofence afterwards improved, and a fair start was made until a breakback from Hopkins beat Young and wrecked his wicket in the bowler's second over. He batted 60 minutes for his 17 runs. Killick joined Vine, who waß showing no enterprise, and was batting very slowly.' Killick was apparently bowled In Noble's first over, and retired to the ring, but was called bock. The incident did not make any material difference to the county's score, for two runs later Noble bowled him beyond doubt. Three wickets were down for 48 when A. E. Relf joined Vine, and a useful partnership raised the total to 84. Vine played doggedly, but made some faulty strokes. He was at the wickets fox 150 minutes for 89 runs, and was out in stepping in front of a straight one from Armstrong. Five runs later Relf, who had played very sound cricket, was caught by Mac: alister off Armstrong for 24, and after that the innings was a mere procession. The last six wickets were captured in seven overs, Cartwright and Vincett making ducks. The wicket was difficult when the Australians opened with Hartigan and Noble. Hartigan was cleverly caught at the wickets by one from Relf, which be ran forward to meet, but failed to get on to. Noble, who was joined by Ransford, also fell to the wicketkeeper off Relf when he had made 11, five runs after Hartigan's departure. McAlister, who came next, had a career as exciting as it was brief. . He gave a difficult chance off the first ball from Relf, which was riot accepted, and put hi? leg in front of the second. Three wickets had now fallen to Relf's bowling in half an hour for a total of 30 runs. Ransford "did not long survive McAlister, being caught by Relf off Vincett for 7. ' ■'-•>: ' Gregory only made one more, and then retired at the instance of the brothers Relf, Robert catching him olTAlbeftT ' Trumper and Armstrong played out ' time, the Sydney crack playing many fine strokes and exhibiting a grand dei fence.
