The ground was inclined to be slippery, and the weather wai overcast and threatening, slight showes before the match rendering the ball gresy. It was seen early in the struggle tha r Wanganui was the bettertrained team.and before "no side" sounded it was painnlly plain that many of the Taranakl mci were carrying too much condition. The play of the home forwards was "dead" and there was no devil In their work, eicept for a few minutes upon the opening <f the second spell and Just before the onclusion. The line-kicking of the home nicks was not up to the mark either, and th> big forwards had too much running about Wanganui had by far the best of the s-rnm work, which was not too good. The postponed meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union committee was held last evening, when there were present: Messrs. M. J. Sheahau (chairman), R. 11. Froude, P. J. Uhlsou, and C. V. I.angsford (secretary). An apology was received from Mr. Sonierlield for absence owing to Illness. The secretary of the King's College football team wrote forwarding letters received by him In connection with the replacing of an injured player in the recent match I against the Grammar School, and asked [for a ruling on the point raised. The facts !\vere: "At the match Grammar School v. ■ King's College, played at Alexandra Park ! last Saturday, Bnrstow, a King's player, ■ was Injured townrds the end of the first spell. Within two minutes of the second spell he retired, and Ellis took his place. j Our captain did not ask permission to make I the change. The Grammar captain neither then nor subsequently during the game objected to the change. Did we commit a breach of the rules of the game, as alleged toy the secretary of the Grammar School Club In his letter? We arc not asking merely from curiosity; for, naturally, we could not allow our name to appear on the banner If we had won our match by n breach 1 of the rules. And our future action must depend on your decision." The letters referred to were (1) a protest against the King's College on the ground that the Kings replaced an Injured player, and <2) a letter withdrawing the protest, and adding that the Grammar School wished It to be clearly understood that It did not in any way condone the 'breach of the rules of the game of which the King's College were guilty. After a long discussion, Mr. Ohlson moved that a reply be sent that it was a ruling of the English Rugby Union that an injured player cannot be replaced, but It has been the practice In the Dominion to allow an Injured player to lie replaced by another provided the consent of the opposing captain has been previously obtained, which in many cases has been offered voluntarily. Mr. Froude moved that the matter be deferred. This lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr. Langsford moved to add to Mr. Ohlson's motion: "That the English Union had also ruled that the onus is on a side to see that their opponents do not play more than 15 men." The motion as amended was carried. TROPHIES. Mr. White's price was accepted for trophies for the various competitions. AN APPEAL. An appeal by the P.T.R. against the decision of the Wednesday Rftgfoy Union in awarding the recent match with the Butchers was deferred till next Wednesday. PUBLIC SCHOOLS' MATCH. It was decided to grant the Public Schools' Union £3 towards the trip of the schools' representatives to Hamilton on Saturday next. Addition to the Fold.—Application from the Hofcinnga Union for affiliation was received and granted. The new union has five teams playing under Its banner. THE RUGBY UNION'S RULING. (To the Editor.} Sir, —The closing clause of the ruling of the Auckland Rugby Union that the consent of the opposing captain "in many cases has been offered voluntarily," forces mc, much against my will, to say a word In defence of the Grammar School captain of football. I certainly did, In a letter to tho Principal of King's College, state that, as far fts the Grammar Bcjaool waa concerned,

the incident was closed. Bat for all that, It seems to mc a very strange proceeding that any ruling should have been given by the A.R.TJ. without reference to the Grammar School Club. Our captain's position Is that he was not aware of the fact that a new and fresh plnyer'had been Introduced Into the opposing team "till the passing rush in which King's scored took place." But more than that, I have the assurance of the Principal of King's College that "the substitute went on the field In Barstow's place of his own accord, and without the knowledge of Walker, our captain." I am prepared to grant that It is no affair of mine thut a King's College boyshould set at nought the authority of his own captain; but I hold It a serious, matter when he presumes to Ignore the captain, of the other side. With regard to that part of the ruling which reminds us that "the onus Is on a side to see that their opponents do not play more than 15 men," which was also pleaded before the Secondary Schools' Union by King's College football master, I can onlysay that our captain did not from time to time count and identify his opponents, because, while he was aware that they had a minute technical knowledge of the laws of football, he al«o gave them credit for a lofty appreciation of the courtesies of the game.—Yours, etc. J.
