Mr. Longmore (second officer of the Talune) proceeds to Dunedin for orders, and Mr. Dryden takes his place. Mr. W. A. Eastgate, of Shearer and Eastgate, left last night by the Main Trunk line on a short holiday to Wellington, Mr. David Zander, of Christchurch, was an arrival by the through train this morning, and is stopping at the Central Hotel. Mr. S. Ivirkpatrick (of Nelson) cwne through by the Main Trunk train this morning, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Claud Williams (of Gisborne) came down by the Rotorua express last nhzht, and is stopping at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Geo. Lorimer, a Melbourne visitor, and Mr. A. B. Sanderson, of Edinburgh, are at present staying at the Grand Hotel. Messrs W. and V. Scantlebury, of New Plymouth, arrived by the West Coast boat yesterday, and this morning proceeded' to Waihi. Mr. F. Johnson, a tourist from Pittsburg, United States, arrived from Rotorua by the express last night, and is staying at the Star Hotel. Major and Mis. Allan Bell, of Hamilton, came down by the Main Trunk train this morning for a few days' visit, and are stopping at the Central Hotel. Mr. H. .T. Wynne, head signalman of the Railway Department, arrived by the Main Triink train on an official visit this morning, and is staying at the Central Hpte.l. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lowes, of Ashhurst, returned from a three weeks' visit to Rotorua yesterday, and are staying at the Ro.val Hotel for a few days, prior to returning home. Mr. E. W. Dinnie, finger-print expert to the Police Department, who has been on a visit Home, returned to Wellington on Wednesday by the Sydney steamer, accompanied by Mrs. Dinnie. Lieut.-Col. Gudgeon. C.M.G., who recently retired from the Residency at the Cook Islands, was a passenger to Auckland by the Taiune, which arrived from the Islands this morning. As the result of a kick received when playing in a football match, Napier v. Gisborne Cadets, a few days ago, J. C. Lang, aged 17, is lying in Gisborne Hospital in a critical conditions. Mr. J. A. Bradley, of the Cook Island Trading Company, was a passenger today by the Talune from the Islands, and is staying at the Central H->tel during his stop-oveT in Auckland. Mr- D. A. Watt, 8.A., has been appointed to the teaching staff of the Auckland Grammar School, in place of Mr. W. G. Aldridge, M.A., who has been appointed science master at the Technical School at Christchurch. Mr. George Palmer, a well-known veteran, late of lI.M. 40th Regiment, passed away at the Veterans' Home yesterday afternoon, at the age of 70 years. De ceased had been ailing for the past year, the cause of death being heart failure. The death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Mr- William Adair, one of the first merchants of Gisborne, for over thirty years, and cne of Gisborne's most reapcctecl clbir.r-tls. He underwent an operation on Tuesday, and did not recover. Mr. A. J. Macpherson, of the money order branch of the Post Office, leaves by the Main Trunk express on Sunday night for Xapier, on promotion. MrMacpherson is one of the most popular members of the staff, and his departure is generally regretted by his fellow officials in Auckland. Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Plunket visited the Girls' Grammar School at Howe-street yesterday morning, the Governor delivering a short address to the scholars. In the evening his Excellency, accompanied by Captains Hardy, and Shannon. AD.C.'s, attended Prolessor Bickerton's lecture at the Y.M.CA. Hall. Lady Plunket, accompanied by Mrs. Wnterfield, attended the Mothers' Meeting at St. Matthew's Church.
