A BILLIARDS RECORD.
(Received 11 a.m.) ! MELBOURNE, this day. j Young George Gray, playing against ' F. Lindrum, broke the world's billiards ■ record with a break of 836, of which 831 came off the red. Gray and Lindrum are playing a match of 16,000 up. Gray, receiving 4000 in 14,000, defeated Lindrum in Sydney last December by 4643. In the return match ' at Melbourne, Lindrum gave away 2000 points, and won by 3046. He only yen- j tured to concede 2300 in 16,000 in Sydney j this month, when Gray bolted and won; ' and the start was cut down to 1000 in the j Melbourne match. Gray has made many ! by losing hazard breaks. Mastery j over the losing hazard hay- ] ing been accomplished by him, i it is very probable that the stroke will be legislated against to some extent in England, particularly if the Australian j lad goes to that country and employs it i with results disastrous to the interests of > his opponents. Until, however, more than one player has demonstrated his ability to make colossal and successive losing i hazard runs, the Billiard Association of j Great Britain ought not to intervene, i When Stevenson was in Australia he did i not scorn to try and beat Inman's record off the red, and there was a great fuss made in England lately when the feat was accomplished by the champion.
