YORKSHIRE SCORE FREELY.

. 1 ALL OUT FOB 399, ON A FAIR WICKET. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright,) (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 21. The Australian cricketers commenced their match with Yorkshire at Bradford to-day. Showers fell yesterday, but to-day the weather was warm, and the wicket was in fair condition. Hartigan, Carkeek, O'Connor, Hopkins, and Whitty were omitted from the Australian team, which thus consisted of :— M. A. Noble (captain), V. Trumper, C. G. Macartney, S. E. Gregory, W. Barda- ! ley A. Cotter, H. Carter, P. A. McAlister, '■ W. W. Armstrong F. Layer, and V. | Bansf ord.

Yorkshire were represented by S. Haigh, W. Rhodes, G. H. Hirst, Radcliffe, H. Myers, D. Hunter, W. H. Wilkinson, J. W. Rothery, J. T. Newstead, D. Denton, and E. R. Wilson.

Yorkshire won the toss, and decided to bat first, Rhodes and Wilson opening to the bowling of Layer and Armstrong. Both batsmen were lively from the jump, and began to make runs in the first over. In threequarters of an hour they lifted the score to 49, and then Noble tried the first change, replacing Armstrong by Macartney. The change proved effective, the Sydney bowler tempting Wilson out in the first over and giving Carter an opportunity to shift the bails. Wilson had made 17 in good style. 1—49—17.

Denton followed, and the score steadily mounted to 61, when rain caused a 20 minutes' stoppage in play. Noble had previously had a try with the ball, but was not in good form, and the batsmen punished him severely, 11 being knocked cff one over.

On resuming, Layer bowled again and dismissed Rhodes, smartly catching him off his own bowling, ior a well-played 42. 2—71—42.

Wilkinson followed, but the third wicket fell without any addition to the score, the new-comer losing his wicket in playing forward to one from Layer. 3—71—0.

The luncheon adjournment was then taken, and on resuming, Hirst accompanied Denton to the wicket. Play continued brisk, and the century appeared as the result of an liour and a half's play. Cotter had come on, and Hirst welcomed him by biting three fouTers .off his first over. The fast bowler had his revenge in the second, however, Armstrong in the slips, snapping up a lightning chance from the international. 4—loo —16.

Rothery filled the vacancy, but only made a short stay, Cotter finding his wicket when he had made 2. 5—108—2.

After the tea adjournment Cotter and Layer bowled. Cotter's opening deliveries wore wild, but he afterwards became steadier. Layer, keeping a fine length, succeeded in restraining Denton's run-getting, and his half century took 95 minutes. Myers was backing him up by sound, steady cricket. With the score at 154 rain and duskiness stopped play for 25 minutes. On re—imlng, the batsmen made up for lost time, knocking 24 off three overs. The second century was hoisted at the end of three hours and five minutes' play. Denton reached the centurj' at the end of 170 minutes.

The light was varying considerably. Myers, after a sound, chanceless innings, of 53, made in 115 minutes, lost his wicket in playing back to Noble. 6— 245—53.

After Myers' departure, the end soon came, chiefly through the instrumentality of Layer. When Denton had added five to his score, he lifted one from Layer to Macartney, who held the catch. Radcliffe, vAo had followed Myers, went in the same way after making five.

Newstead" made a stand, but at 19 touched one, which flew back to Carter, and was safely held.

Hunter and Haigh were the last pair, : and the latter carried his bat for 10, Hun- , ter being clean bowled by Macartney after making 14. The innings closed with the total at 299, and stumps were then drawn for the day. The following are the scores:— YORKSHIRE.—First Innings. E. R. Wilson, st Carter, b Macartney 17 W.
