TE.-VJVfcre-. DEEP __3V___3. The directors of the Saxon CM. Co. met late yesterday afternoon to consider the question oi joining in a deep level development scheme at Thames. It was finally agreed to consent to the proposal to drive a crosscut at 1000 ft in a straight line from the Queen of Beauty shaft towards underneath the EuTunni-Caledonian, subject to the proviso that the 400 ft of driving from the tunnel towards the Saxon shaft -shail~lse ~ proceeded with as and when required, by that Company, also that the Company shall not be hindered in continuing the drive to the Saxon shaft.

OHAmMAN OF THE .DRAESTAGtB BOARD. In conversation with a representative of the Auckland " Star," Mr. C. Hudson (chairman of the Thames Drainage Board and member of the Deep Levels tee) saidr " It is very gratifying to find that the directors oi the Saxon Gold Mining Company have reconsidered the attitude they adopted in respect to the route of the tunnel at IOQO feet. It is understood that they would have preferred a drive going more in the direction : of their own shaft, but that in the interests of the field at large they recognised that there must be a give and take policy in this -matter. It is now expected that the Victoria Company -will fall into line, and as soon as the Deer> Levela Committee has received the alssent of the •airectors of that property to this route, pt only ismaißs jo get the decision of the

directors of the Euruaui Caledonian Company. Thft directors of this company are in London, and the whole facta of the case have already been placed before them by letter. Their local representative (Mr. G. H. Gilfillan) is at present in London, and has with him full particulars of the scheme* so that he will be in a position to fully explain matters to his directors." " I noticed that the Saxon directors tacked a condition, on to their approval to the schemer"

" Well, I can see no objection to their request that the 400 feet of driving from the tunnel towards their shaft shall be gone on with immediately the tunnel reaches a suitable point at which, to start operations in their groand. That request seems to mc to be a perfectly reasonable one, as out desire is that the respective companies should tal;e advantage of the tunnel at the earliest possible moment. As far as the Waiotaihi Company is concerned, it is the intention of the directors to start deepening their shaft as soon as ever the -water begins to drain away. There is an impression that I a Hard bar exists below that ias prevented the water draining- a.w»-y to the Queen, ol Beauty ehait, and i£ auch is the our hope is that ac soon as tbo-t bar is cat through by the tunnel tie water in our shaft will begin, to drain away. As soon as we get the consent of the directors of the Victoria Company to this scheme, we ■will be in a. position, to make application to the Government for the subsidy. The Minister for Mines (the Hon. B. McKenzie) has stated that be is only waiting for the companies interested to agree regarding the route of | the tunnel, co, once that is accomplished, th«re should be no difficulty regarding semiring the subsidy. When that lias been granted, there should not be much delay in getting this important work of developing Thames deep levels under weigh."

MINE MANAGEES' EEPOETS. Watchman.—After driving tlirough tare* feet of sandstone, interlaced with quarta atriagers, another body of ore has been met with, and penetrated six feet; but the manager at present cannot cay ■whether or not tale is tine parallel reef, ac the ore is of the same character and appearance, and quite as valuable, a s that sunk on lii the winze. The face has a food appearance, and this drive -will be conturned until all the qnartz has been passed through. So far. 12ft have been, driven through the quartz. Shotover.—The formation has now been driven upon for 87ftv in a good channel of country. There Is a "head" crossing the face at present, and, after passing this, the manager expects a change. Assays from the face at 80ft $aye 18/ per ton; stone from the surface drive over the low level, £9 3/ per ton. A rise 40ft from the present level will reach this ore.
