THE DREADNOUGHT OFFER.

APPROVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.): WELLINGTON, this day. ! The Legislative Council met at 10.30 a.m., when the Hon. J. McGowan moved the Address-in-Reply to the Governor's Speech. He regretted that some spurious "workers" had declared that the money required for the Dreadnought could be better spent in finding employment in New Zealand. They had a right to ;be proud of the genius of the man who had done the right thing at the right time. : Sir (Joseph Ward the existence of the 'Government mm 'the ratification of their offer. We should pay a fair share towards the'navy. The Hon. C. "H. Mills seconded the •motion. He said the present naval subsidy was not. sufficient. The Dominion was short of capital, but he advocated legitimate -borrowing. The Hon. Wigram supported the offer Of a Dreadnought. In a .very short time, he said, aerial navigation would be a live subject, and' the Council should make enquiries. [ The Hon. Sinclair said the offer, as imade, wos worth infinitely more than its money value. National defence was a national duty, and the colonies .must not take help and shirk pay. They must look to their own harbour defences and equipment. The Hon. Dr. vFindlay congratulated the mover and seconder. He was glad the Council endorsed the Dreadnought offer so warmly. The motion was carried, and tbe Council adjourned at 12.30, till 2.30 p.m.
