The master of the barque Salgran, which arrived from Newcastle to-day, adopted an unusual expedient to bring his vessel up to the tvharf. Instead of securing the services of a tug, he employed three oil launches. These went ahead of the vessel in single line, and towed her up the harbour. When off the Queen-street Wharf the master of the barque was informed by the harbourmaster that the launches would not be allowed to take his vessel to a berth. The launches slewed round with the idea of bring the barque to an anchorage. Just then the tow line between the centre and after launch broke, and the latter had a narrow escape of being dashed to pieces on the bow of the barque. Fortunately the Solgran had little way on, and the anchor was dropped in time. The Ferry Co.'s steamer Young Bungaree then went out and took the barque in tow to her berth. Mails from Vancouver, British Columbia, and Fiji, with a very small portion from other parts of Canada, arrived in Auckland by the s.s. Indravelli from Vancouver this morning. The number of bags was by no means large, the balk of the American mail being expected by the Century, now due from San Francisco. At the Suburban Local Bodies' Conference last evening the subject of the suburban tram service was brought up by Mr Dempsey, chairman of the Remuera Roard Board, who stated that in twenty years tha population of the suburbs of Auckland had increased from 22,000 to 49,000, and that from Newmarket to Penrose the population had increased probably over ten times in that period. Yet the suburban passenger service had remained practically stationary, as far as serving business men and working men especially, for about 25 •years. The Bailway Department had been asleep for 20 years as far as this traffic was concerned, and it was high i time they were shaken up a bit. Other delegates strongly supported the contention that the population now warranted a better service. A resolution was passed: "That the Conference give all possible assistance in furthering the object of getting a more efficient suburban train service."
