AUCKLAND POULTRY SHOW.

TENTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION.

GAME AND UTILITY BIRDS,

THE PRIZE LIST,

The Auckland and Suburban Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Assocktion opened its tenth annual show at tae Choral Hall this afternoon, the Mayer of Auckland (Mr C. D. Grey) performing the opening ceremony in the presence of a good crowd of spectators.

The exhibits at this ytar's total between 600 and 700 biids, and though hardly up to the standard of previous years in the matter of numbers, there is no falling off in quality. The Leghorn, Wyandotte, Orpington and Plymouth Rock classes are well represented, and the fancy and game birds are such as to afford poultry fanciers attending the show every satisfaction. Unfortunately, the breeding of game and fancy stock has largely given way in recent years to the production of table and utility birds, and the holding of laying competitions throughout the Dominion has been largely responsible for the decreasing interest displayed in the rearing of fancy breeds. At this year's show several breeders who have previously exhibited largely are not showing, and prominent amongst these are Messrs G. R. Hutchinson and J. R. Nixon, who have hitherto shown largely with Minorcas, Andalusians, Orpingtons and Wyandottes. Others who are scarcely represented this year ara Messrs J. B. Tonar and F. B. Lovelock, while Mr J. M. Thompson, who last year bad 50 entries in the canary classes, is not showing at all this year.

Tliq Orpingtons are a 1 class as equai to anything ever shOU'll 111 JLUIiIL' the entries are tiardly up* to * cue age, and there was practically HO (lUlllpetition except amongst t&e pla-ced. t»irdsThe Buff Orpingtons are something of a disappointment in quality, and it is evident that they have gone back on ArE.°StOfl?x°anu aiwT/s been keen competitors in this class, and this is the first year that Mr. Stouex has won the majority of prizes. The best bird shown in the Black Orpingtons is a very fine cockerel, shown by Mr. Stonex. This, in the judge's opinion, is one of the finest birds that has ever been shown in Auckland - . It is very low set for a cocKerel, full in the breast, true to type in almost every detail, and splendidly shown. The pullets in the Orpingtou class are also very good.

The Leghorns have enticed large entries. Tonar Bros, carried off a special with their white cockerel, and A. .Moreland a. special with a white pullet. J. L Whitehouse also carried off several prizes, including two specials. The Wyandottes comprise a big class to judge, W. A. Hanson, W. Dunn, B. H. Clow, Tonar J. B. Paterson, and S. Leonard figuring prominently amongst the prizewinners. In the Plymouth Rock section, the North Island championship was carried off by Mr EL Thompson, of East lamaki, with a nice barred hen.

The Andalusians and Spanish breeds show a falling off in numbers, though fair in quality. The British game, however, is very good, and competition was keen throughout, the judge, Mr Bouskill, having some difficulty in separating the winners. In the blaclc red cockrel section there was keen competition, first honours being awarded to Mr G. D. Page. The special prize, was carries,' off by Mr Adam Nixon, with a splendid , black red pullet. Mr Nixon also carried off the special for duckwing cock or cockerel, and Mr E. J. Copas for Indian cock.

The ducks do not make a large show, but the quality is well up to the standard' of previous years. The Pekin drake shown by Mr G. M. Howe carried off first and special, and the championship cup. It is evident that Mr Howe did not quite realise the value of his bird, as he had it priced at ten shillings, and defeated others priced at ten guineas. The Indian Runner ducks were of good uniform quality, Messrs H- A. Coatee and T. Dowthwaite showing some birds of good quality.

The pigeons make a good show. The prize for the best pigeon in the show was awarded to Mr C. Collings, with a fine carrier. The Xortb Island championship for best tumbler pigeon went to Mr J. Walker. The English carriers and magpies are very fine exhibits.

The canaries are a feature of the show, and in the opinion of the judge, Mr T. W. Brown, are equal to anything that has been seen in Auckland. Mr Duncan carried off the championship for best bird in the show with a very fine clear yellow Norwich plain, which, in the judge's opinion, is "a real gem."

The Show will remain open until Saturday. The secretary (Mr H. Tattersall) and his assistant (Mr J. B. Patterson) have all arrangements complete, and the exhibition is in every way a success. Following is the prize list:— Wyandottes (judge Mr. S. Hobbls).— Silver laced cock: W. A. Hanson 1 and special and v.h.c, Wm. Scott 2, F. Walters 3, W. F. Connor h.c. Silver laced heh: W. A.
