(NO. 1., OUR RIVALS NOW DISCOVER THAT LIQUOR IS EXEMPT. AFTER SO MANY YEARS' PUBLIC SERVICE. MEN AND WOMEN;.. The Government and' City Council have spent no end of money and time, and rightly too, in appointing numerous inspectors to inspect our food supply; for instance, the taking over of abattoirs to ensure only sout-d and first-class meat being sold and to prevent the spreading of disease. Our dairies are constantly and irksomely -watched to see that nothing but pure. milk, is being sold, even the addition of pure water is forbidden, the grand object being, by -protecting the infant from the cradle, to ensure a healthy race. Yet, strange but true, liquor of all kinds is exempt; obviously those /in supreme power recognise that :quor is not an article of diet, but a slow poison. The power to deal with this is in the hands of the people, and they are exercising it in a firm manner, but in the meantime unfortunate youths and men and women are gradually, by allurements, becoming slaves, and, •with ruined constitution, care little as to. quality (there being only one selling price) so long as the vile stuff bites their hardened palates, •with the inevitable end—misery, disgrace, lunacy, or an early death, without mentioning those who in drunken fits commit heinous offences, and all more or less become a "burden upon the State. WHY SHOULD THIS BE TO ENRICH THE LIQUOR VENDORS 1 Prior to the last general election a glaring advt. appeared in the 'Star" and "Herald," inserted by the Liquor Monopoly, enlarging upon the price of King Country Whisky and Beer.—comment at present is needless.
