The Land for Settlement Act has evidently come to stay, judging by the results to be seen at Matama.ta and Maungawbero. Formerly when these estates vrere privately owned, the total population was under 50, now, as a I result of the subdivision of the estates, i there are about 470 people mostly engaged in: the dairying industry. A re- ' cent visitor mentioned to a "Star" re- ; presentative that while at Matamata. he ; noticed the smoke stacks of six milking machines at different farms. The trouble up there, he remarked, does not seem ' to be the shortage of labour, but the shortage ; of cows, as the farmers find L they can milk 30 to 50' cows more thar they did before they procured the milk ing machines.
