(NO. 5.) SOLUTION OF THE HOUSING PKOBLEM. MEN AND WOMEN I YOU HOLD THE KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR OF THIS FAIR CITY, LEADING TO HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY; BUT TO SECURE THESE BLESS INGS YOU MUST APPLY IT ON THE 9 th MARCH. Judging from the information before ns, ; the Liquor Monopoly docs remarkably -well out of its drinking places, so the closing of 14 of them will still leave them with, a very good margin of profit. Judge Kettle very wisely and truly, a few days ago, stated, through the columns of the " Heraldj" that our beautiful parks and .Hardens were occupied by drunks, sleeping off their stupor, and it was about time the City Council or Police took up the matter. What is the number, in other places, that never comes, except officially, under Judge Kettle's notice ? MIGHT WE ASK, WHO SUPFLIES THE STRONG DRINK ? MEN AND "WOMEN ! Sir Geo. Grey, after mature consideration, gave you the Liberal power, as he recognised that the will of -the people was not coercion or an experiment. You are, therefore, called upon to exercise this power on the 9th MAKCH by returning the present Licensing Committee pledged to close 14 drinkinghouses, which will allow the City (Council and, builders to erect a suitable kind of workman's homes in place of the tumbling-down sheds in many back and side streets, and which homes, let at a fair rental, will cater for the -working man with a family, in receipt of a small and casual wage, many of whom cannot afford to live too far from their work and be heavily taxed with tram fares. Are you going to allow the Liquor Monopoly to try and control this City 1 We say NO ! until it is made amenable to the will of the people. Listen not to the Liquor Monopoly's liquid promises made through the Press, also daily to their supporters (the object being to retain waning votes), viz., that they would abolish barmaids (though still engaging them. — See Advt. "Star," 16/2/09). 'Stop the sale of liquor to youths and women, which would entail a heavy loss to the monopoly. Now, not long ago, the Liquor Monopoly, backed to a certain extent by the Police, stated to the Bench that it was news to them if youths and women were supplied ■with strong drink; in fact, its fine feelings were hurt at such a suggestion. After this confession, what is the value of the Liquor Monopoly's evaporating promises? Even assuming one could rely upon them, who is to see that they are fulfilled ? THE MOST EFFECTUAL WAY IS, BY RETURNING THE PRESENT LICENSING COMMITTEE (WHOSE NAMES WE PUBLISH IN THE NEXT COLUMN OF THIS ISSUE.), TO CLOSE 14 DRINKING HOUSES, TO WHICH MANDATE THiE PKESUNT COMMITTEE IS FLEDGED. We remain, etc., THE BAXD OF BUSINESS iIEN. N.B.—Prior to the last genera! elections the Liquor Monopoly stated in its adyta.: "The Press is powerless" to prevent our telling arguments being published, which arguments the result of the general election verified. The final decision on MARCH 9tu will be confirmatory proof that our time and money spent was appreciated. T.8.8.M. P.S.—See our other advt. in next column.
