THE PICTURE ENLARGEMENT IMPOSTURE.
rro the Editor.* Sir,—l can fully endorse the article in your issue of Thursday last on what is known as "The free picture Business. Canvassers are going from house to house soliciting orders for enlargements. They introduce themselves by stating that they will make an enlargement from any photo absolutely free of cost. They make their first score by taking away the small picture and soon afterwards a man calls -with frames. He states that a frame must be bought, the prices of which range up to 45/. In some cases they succeed, and secure a deposit. The address of the firm's office is a vague one, such as " Queen-Btreet." Some friends of mine have fallen victims to the trick. They have demanded the return of the original photos, but up to the present are unable to get them back. I really think the public deserve what they Buffer by these shady practices, when they turn their backs on firms of repute in the City, who do this business in a straightforward way. In fact, I know of one Auckland firm which does excellent enlargements, framed complete, from 20/. In view of these facts, I think the public would do much better than entetaining the " Free picture man."—l am, etc., FAIRPLAY. [A reference to this matter appears in our Legal Inquiry column to night.—Ed.]
