WORK IN NEW ZEALAND.

AVAILABLE FOB THOUSANDS. REPLY TO TRADES COUNCIL. (Keceived 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, January 19. Mr Edward Grimwade, a partner in Grimwadeß, Ltd., of Stoke-on-Trent, after j a residence of four years in New Zealand, declares that, despite the reports of the trades and labour councils, remunerative work is available there for thousands. It is, he continues, absolutely untrue and wicked to assert that workers are no better off there than in England. At its last meeting in 1908 the Auckland Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution instructing the executive to i draft a letter to be forwarded to thei leading newspapers in Britain giving a>. j statement of the true circumstances of ; the labour market, including wages and j the amount of work available, in New I Zealand. Similar action was taken by the Canterbury Council earlier in tho year, both being the outcome of the flooding of the labour market by the stream of immigration. Mr. A- Rosser, ex-presi- i dent of the Auckland Council, states in j reply to Mr. Grimwade's assertion that yesterday forty unionist carpenters signed the labour book and that last week fifty applications were received in reply j to a "wanted" advertisement in the i "Star for two boilermakers and assist- j ants. The council claims, he says, that! the amount of work available is sufficient ; for the tradesmen in the city, were it not '. that the supply is continually increased by the arrival of large batches of immigrants from England."
