AMUSEMENTS.

HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. Messrs Maskelyne and Devant's Company produced their clever entertainment before a large audience at His Majesty's Theatre last night. The various clever turns which are included in an extremely attractive programme met with an excellent reception. The entertainment will be staged again this evening. THE TITTELL BRUNE SEASON. The box plans for six performances of '"The Girl of the Golden West," commencing on Monday evening at His Majesty's Theatre, by Miss Tittell Brune and Mr. J. C. Williamson's Dramatic Company, was opened at Wildman and Arev"s this morning at nine o'clock. A large crowd was present, and for just over an hour two attendants were kept busy marking off seats. The results evidenced the quite exceptional interest being taken in the re-appearance here of the young actress, who has so completely captured the good opinions of theatregoers throughout Australasia, and who seems not only to have ratified her star position, but to have become a greater individual attraction than any artist that has visited the colonies for many years. In this connection, a wellknown critic wrote: "The secret of such success as Miss Brune's cannot be written in mere words, it springs from that indefinable something which we are usually pleased to term 'genius.' It is inherent in her every fibre. Hers is a mission of feeling—of feeling so spontaneous as ia the song of birds in sunshine. She holds her audience tightly in the hollow of a diminutive palm, and hers is the conquest over tears and laughter; hers the privilege one moment to confer a boon of uncontrollable merriment, the next to fire with the rising inflection of passion. She is unique in that she is both a comedienne and a tragedienne; unique in that she connects the very positive and negative poles of her art." Miss Tittell Brune, as "The Girl," the heroine of David Belasio's American play, "The Girl of the Golden West," does' splendid work throughout the unfolding of the story, and is said to pourtray with unerring skill and veracity, the warm, frank, and passionate nature of a woman who has managed to retain the innate freshness and purity of her girlhood among the roughest and most unpromising surroundings. Mr. Thos. Kingston, as "Dick Johnson." has many opportunities for the display of emotion and vigour. An important role is that of the Sheriff, by Mr. Geo. Bryant. The scenery and mechanical staff arrive in Auckland to-morrow morning, so that everything will be in readiness for Monday night's opening performance. THE OPERA HOUSE. The Wide World Pictures, which are being shown at the Opera House, are an attractive selection, and the audience last night thoroughly appreciated tho programme. The pictures comprise a wide range of subjects, and are s=hown with marvellous clearness and steadiness. The entertainment will be repeated again this evening and throughout the week.

OOLEMAVS BIOSCOPE POPS. Coleman's Bioscope Pops commenced their season at Ponsonby last nicht, and, judging by the applause bestowed" on the artists and pictures, the show was a great success. The programme was bright and sparkling without a trace of vulgarity. The pictures shown were exceptionally clear and steady, whilst a few explanatory remarks on each one greatly added to the general interest. Levarto is exceptionally versatile in illustrated' songs, ventriloquism, and juggling, and was a host in himself. Miss Hadee More was heard to advantage in illustrated songs, and Mr Chas. Wand in humorous songs was a distinct success. It is the intention of the management to run the Suburban Bioscope Pops every week, and a weekly change of programme is announced.
