DOMINION DEFENCE.

XRAIXLXG THE YOUTHS. : An interesting discussion arose atthi. meeting of the Auckland Education Board to-day in connection with correspondence from the Department asking for information as to the steps being taken with regard to the proposal to establish mini* ture rifle ranges in schools. The Chainuan (Mr C. J. Parr) expressed his entire approval of the proposal to teach the young people of New Zealand to sli :ot. He would move that they ask for a. report on the subject from the architect and the officers commanding the school battalions on the question. He was very pleased to see that most of the candidates for Parlia« ment'had taken up Ike .question of providing for further military training after leaving school. The enthusiasm at present engendered at school amongst the cadet corps was largely being wasted after the boys left school, and a lot of good material was remaining unußed. Hβ was glad to observe that nearly all their public men had taken the matter into consideration. Mr McKenzie remarked that he considered the proposal for training after leaving school one of the finest thingl that could be inaugurated in the Do> minion. He thought that it would be a splendid scheme, viewed from the highest standpoint, as it would result in keeping the youns lads off the streets. Ho believed that the force of example would have a good effect. Other members also expressed approval of the idea, and the chairman's motioi was carried unanimously.
