TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

THE QUESTION OF FINANCE. Mr. George Goorgp, director of technical education, was present at the. meeting of the Auckland Education Board today, after his extended vacation spent in Europe and America. The chairman (Mr. C. J. Parr) wel- i coined Mr. George back to Auckland, and expressed the bplnton that, further deVelopmont might be looked for in different parts of the district in rrgarcl to technical education. Mr. George, in thanking the Board for it.-; welcome, remarked that he believed that the time had been well spent. He had already arranged to publish a series of articlps dealing with the movement of education, together with his impressions oi the various types of schools. It "was rathe- unfortunate that there was to be found in this country, from headquarters, not the same earnestness that there might be. He referred to the apparent tendency in regard to cutting down grants and capitations. In other countries he had visited there wa? a striking liberality in these, matter?. In Xew Zealand, they had the finest raw material j ill the world. (Hear, hear.) It only needed developing. They could not have education withont money. If Uie people would only realise the immense importance of education in this cvnnectkm they would have, the best education in the world. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to tender a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Darrell Smith for the manner in which b^-had filled the position of director in Mr. George's absence.
