MINING AND RESIDENCE SITES. GRAND JUNCTION OBJECTION NOT - SUSTAINED. {By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.! mm ■' WADE, this day. A case of considerable importance to . residence site holders came.before Mr. Burgess in the Warden's Court to-day, when James Doney applied for the suri render of section 340, -which, having been subdivided, waa applied for as 340 D and , 340 C, respectively, by P. P. Kerwan i and F. Walsh. Mr. Jackson objected on - behalf of the Grand Junction Company. , The were represented by Mr. . Mueller. Mr. Jackson referred to the operations . of the Grand Junction Company, and stated that a quarter million pounds had - been spent before there was' any re- . turn. The position, of residence sites L was in'a very unsatisfactory condition, , and it seemed very unfair, if the application before the Court were granted and land was required . for. mining purposes later on, that the Grand Junction Company should have to pay heavy com- . pensation for resumption, in addition to the amount already spent.for rents over , the area in question. "'.. Mr. F. C. Brown, the company's superintendent, gave evidence- that there was a prospect of the sections in question being required by the Company later on,, and it might be that this particular land would be a point of very large operations. He could not say definitely whether it would be necessary to resume these leases, but if such did eventuate, they wanted to resume them without having to pay heavy compensation. Personally, he would be only- too pleased if he could forecast future operations a3 to the location of shafts, etc., so that sites outside those specially re- . served for mining purposes might be : settled on by "\the miners engaged by . the company. - The Warden said he was not satisfied ■ from the evidence that the land would . be required in the near future for mm.- . ing purposes; in fact, it seemed to him that the chances in that direction" were i exceedingly remote. He therefore dismissed the- objection, -and granted the i application- - TAIRUA REEFS.
