ST. DAVID'S CHUBCH SOCIAIj. On Friday, at St. Da-od's Parieh Church Hall, before a very large audience, a most enjoya-bJe congregational social and soiree was held., the Rev. iW. Gray Dlxpn, M.A., presiding. The proceedings began with a sumptuous tea, kindly provided by the ladies of the parish, those comprising dUttabte. Then came the social proper, which, ferent districts haying each a separate consisting for the most part of living: pictures In tableau form, most elaborately got up. The following were the subjects portrayed .—Statuary, "Home She Brought Her Warrior Dead," "Stone Pictures, 3 Acts, Hope. Charity," "The Geisha Girls," "Art Song. Literature." "Coming Through the Eye, ,- "Camp Fire," "All Nations," "The Three Fishers," "Paris Soap." Mr James W. Taylor danced the sword dance, and was encored. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and "The National Anthem" concluded a highly enjoyable performance. The building of the new Btbleclass hall, on behalf of whose funds the social was held, will benefit considerably. SAILORS' HOME. A Meeting of the council of the Auckland Sailors' Home was held on Friday. Present: Mr P. J. Ncrheny (president), Messrs E. H. Potter, T. Harle Giles, X. Gresham, aud B. Fhipps. The dally average number of seamen staying at the Home for September was reported to be 45.1. Accounts amounting to £163 were passed for payment. A request from the Registrar of Electors Auckland Central, for the use of the Mission Hall as a polling place during the forthcoming general election was acceded to. TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the members of the Auckland Total Abstinence Society took place on Friday, in the Church of Christ, Ponsonby-road, and was well attended. Tea vras partaken of at 6.30 o'clock. :ind the business meeting held immediately afterwards. Mr C. Hill presided. The annual report submitted was of an encouraging nature, showing the work that had been done during the past year. The statement of accounts showed total receipts, ££21 18/4; and the expenditure left a credit balance on the year of £95 7/6. The total value of the Society's assets was shown to bo £1924 9/7. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the remainder of the evening was spent in a social manner. An interesting feature of the meeting was a few remarks by Mr E. Tremain, who has been a member of the Society continually for the past 50 years. The officers of the society were all re-elected unopposed. ST. JAMES' HALL. A very successful concert was given in the above Hall on Friday, under the auepices of the Si. James' Church Choir. There was a large and appreciative audience. The first part consisted of glees by the Choir, and solos, which were all well rendered. The concluding portion consisted of a very amusing sketch, entitled, "The Ladies' Parliament of 2023 A.D." The various parts were well sustained by Mrs Forsyth and pupils, and the witty dialogue and by-play created great merriment. BATFIELD METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. The children's annual social in connection with the above school was held on Friday evening last, and at the tea and entertainment afterwards a large number of children and friends fully enjoyed themselves. Action songs, recitations, vocal and pianoforte solos, and gramophone selections were all greatly appreciated. The superintendent of tne scnooi presided,and all the teachers ably assisted him to make this annual social a great success. The Epiphany Parish social has been postponed till Friday. October 30th. and will be held in the Druids' Hall, North-street. A meeting of Grammar School Old Girls will be held in the Grammar School Hall nest Weaneeftay evening. ' -'£&
