AKAEANA. RIFLE CLUB. Tbe opening of the season of the Akaraaa Rifle Club took place on Saturday afternoon OQ their range at Penrose. Thsre was a large attendance of members, and seme splendid shooting was done. The ceremony took the form of a teams' match, < aptam (Mr. W. H. Shepherd) versus vice-captain (Mr. M. Atkinson), the latter proving the victors by 44 points, scoring 773 to their opponents' 729. The best scores of the day were the 96 compiled by Mr. s Conlson and the 94 by Mr. A. Patrick, whilst the best range scores were the 33 each of Messrs. Clark, Devore, and Henderson at 200 yds, the possible of Mr. S. Conlson, and the 34 each of Meats. A. Patrick and W. H. Shepherd at 500 yds, and the 30 of Mr. Henderson at eOOyds. A very tricky wind was encountered at the long range, which greatly puzzled the marksmen, and, as tie light was very variable, the high-searin? which resulted is very pleasing. The trophy matches in connection with the Akarana Hide Clnb will be commenced on Saturday afternoon, when Messrs. J. G. Buchanan and W. H. Shepherd's trophies will be flred for. NO. 1 NATIVE RIFIiES. The first competition for the No. 1 Native Rifles' championship belt took place oa Saturday. The conditions attached to the winning of the belt are the live highest scores of eight competitions. The match on Saturday was two shoots, of T shots each at 200 yds. The following were the principal scores:—Corp. Lucas, 31. 3t—B2: Pvt. Purchas 33, 28—61; Ser<rt. C. Smith. 2S. 30—58: Corp. Fricker. 2!). 23—53: LanceCorp. Coulam, 27. 2>—36: Pvt. Griffiths, 27, 2T, 54; Lance-Sergt Neely, 21, 32—53. NO. 2 NATIVE RIFL.ES. The No. 2 Company Native Rifles flred a match for a cup presented by LJeut. W. H. Gibb. to be competed for by the recruits of the company annually. The conditions were ; 12 shots at 200 yds. There were 21 com- I petitors. and the shootmc on the whole was very creditable, considerins that the men were all beginners. The following are the Inchest scores:—Bugler A. Davidson. 44: Pvt. A. V.
