OPENING OF THE SEASON. ROCKY NOOK. The 1908-9 bowling season was ushered in m Saturday by ideal weather, while the renditions generally or Tate have been so favourable for the final preparation of treens, that a satisfactory afternoon was .ssured for ail trtmdlers who participated, tocky Nook was one of the several greens vhich, started operations, aud the large lumber of clubmen, fellow bowlers from ister dubs, and fair ladyea who assembled o take part in the opening function, spent mc aad all a thoroughly enjoyable aiterloon. Prior to the rolling of the first jack icross the green by Mrs Jenkins, the Preient, on behalf of the past and present -•ommittee. presented a handsomely trained photographic group of the two committees to the retiring president. During the afternoon the President's wife, assisted by Mesdames Hodgson, Garrett. Wakerley. Wheeler, lenkins, jun.. Taylor. King, Manson. and LSlair, attended assiduously to the material :omfort of bowlers and visitors. At the conclusion of the play, Mr G. A E*nttle (Auckland Clubi returned thanks on -lehalf of the visitors, who, he assured Rocky Nook, had all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. He had never played on a Detter green himself, and wished his ho«ts i successful season. Might they wm every natch, except when they met his own club. Cheers were then, reciprocated, hosts aud risitors, and combined- in-for the ladies. EPSOM GREEN. The official opening of the Epsom Bowling and Croquet Club took place ou Saturday afternoon, under very favourable circumstances, the weather being all that could be desired. There was a large gathering of members and their friends, and the greens were in perfect condition. The management committee have been hard at work for some time past, and were well rewarded for their painstaking. Mr E. Craig, the newlyelected president, opened the proceedings with a very nice little speech, and Mrs Craig performed the ceremony of throwing the jack across the green, and also of striking a cruu.uet ball to open the croquet greens. The lady members of the Croquet Club dispensed afternoon tea to the visitors, and Marriage's String Band discoursed sweet music, which greatly added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. This club has made great strides since its inauguration, quite a number of new members being elected for the coming season. The following were tbe rpsults of the match. President's v. The Otahuhu Bowling Club's green looked well for the opening (lay, and large numbers of bowlers and lady friends foregathered for the occasion. The president (Mr A. Sturgesj welcomed visitors, and wished everyone a pleasant bowling afternoon as courier to the season, the throwing of the jack being performed by Miss Stnnres. The croquet lawn was also opened. Mrs Wilson, president of the club, driving the first ball, aud declaring the lawns opened. In the evening an entertainment was held, the contributors to the programme being: Messrs B. Strange. M.
