TWENTY INCOMES OF OVER £50,000 A YEAR. The report of the Inland Revenue Commissioners for the year ending March 31st Inst —in which the lower tax on earned Incomes below £2000 per annum came into force—shows that the income tax yielded £31,860,380, a decrease of £31,560 on 1906-7. In 1906-7 (the latest year for which detailed figures are available) there were twenty persons in the kingdom whose incomes were assessed at over £50,000. Their total income was £1,789,723. The number of Incomes assessed at below £50,000 were: Income. The gross income brought under the review of the Commissioners was £943.----702,014, of which £640.048,233 paid tax. The £943,702,014 was made up as follows:— Ownership of lands and houses, £283,741,----544. Occupation of lands, £17,436,532. Government securities, British and Foreign, £40,72-2,274. Businesses and professions. £515.6f.9.8i3. Public and public company ofHcials, £97,----131,541. In ten years the income from the ownership of lands and houses has increased by 21.8 per cent, though lands alone showed a decrease of 3.4 per cejit. Profits from British and foreign Government securities increased 21 per cent In the same period, and profits from businesses and professions 29 per cent, while salaries of Government, corporation, and public company officials increased 02.4 per cent. The conversion of private concerns into public companies, however, tends io raise the last figure. During the year ending March 31st last the value of all the property passing nt death was £315,697.070. The total Includes two estates of over £3,000,000, one between £2,000.000 and £2.500.000, and four between £1.000.000 and £1.500.000.
