J ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. A.B.C. — Your question is also asked by I two other correspondents. The query has i been answered hundreds of times, 'iseison did not win two Auckland Cups in one year. He won on Isoxlng Day ISBS and ' ISS6, and on New year's .Day, ISaS. Loch--1 lei won the second Cup in ISBS. i Lady Fisher (dam of Manlapoto) foaled . a colt to Birkenhead last week. The Leolantis onare Native Rose has fotued a hlly to Monoform, and Wairakau ' a lilly to Seaton Delaval. ; A further payment for the N.Z. Cup, and . due on Friday next, the 23rd inst. > The Cape Colony Assembly, by a> majority of ten, has again refused to license I the use of the totalisator at race meetings. The Soult horse Grenadier was shipped South on Thursday, to fulfil engagements 1 at the Wellington and Christchurcli nieei- ■ Ings. t ; Sid Hodge paid a visit to Waiuku during , the week, aud brought back lSblis, by Ben Godfrey — Houri, a full-brother to Ben ' Jonson. L i The ponies Elcnore, Quadroon, Octoroon , and Talepitcher have been granted certificates by the Auckland Trotting Club official > measurers. Horse-owners made a most satisfactory re- ! sponse to the Auckland Racing Club's pro- . gramme last evening, and the gathering pro- ' mises to be a record one. i _^___ ; Applications for licenses to bet at the » iAuckiand Trotting Club's Spring Meeting will be received up to 1 p.m. on the 20th ' Inst., at the Club's office. ' Mr. Morse's adjustments for the minor f events on the opening day of the Auckland ■ Racing Club's Spring Meeting are not due 1 until Monday, the 26th inst. ' At Mr G. Curries estate, Wanganul, 1 Catherine Gordon, by Fetkln Warbeck 11.— , Sprightly, has foaled a'filly to Soult; and Vane, by Sou-wester — Vinity, a colt to " Field Battery. , Mr F. Macmanemln has consented to act . as starter for the Auckland Trotting Club , on the opening day of their Spring Meeting. Mr O'Connor will be back from 'Wellington in time to officiate on the second day. i The Auckland Trotting Club have no rea- ' son for complaint as to the acceptances received for the various events on the opening day of their spring gathering, and everything > at present points to a highly successful meet- [ Ing. ' A southern exchange says that Mr Low--1 ry's colt Downfall has been extensively • backed for the- New Zealand Cup. All of • Mr Lowry's horses have been withdrawn from their engagements at the Wellington meeting. ' L. Hewitt rode the winner of an importi ant race a month ago. He was given the I mount on The Welkin in the Portland Handicap Plate, in a field of 20, and squeezed home a winner by a neck from Jack Snipe, with F. <■ Wootton's mount, Woolley in the other : place. It is rarely that a jockey is found making such a record as went to the credit of Maher in the race meeting held at Stockton. England. He had eleven mounts, on eight of wliich he was successful, and eecond in a couple of other races. Seven ot his winning mounts were favourites. Although King Billy has been allowed to drop out of liis engagement in the City Handicap, the Hawke's Bay sportsman, Mr. B. J. Watt, evidently intends to be represented at the A.R.C. Meeting, as several of his representatives figured in the nominations ', for the minor events at the gathering. Mr J. Muir, the owner of Folly, dam of : Waipuna, Rauparaha. etc., called In to see ' mc yesterday with the welcome news that the mare had foaled a colt to Soult. Mr Muir is naturally elated at the- arrival of the full-brothei- to Waipuna. and if he turns out as useful, the Walkato sporte- ■ man will have no cause for complaint. The Avondale Jockey Club opened the , inquiry Into certain hoppenings ot their recent meeting last evening, when the evl- • dence of Messrs. Connolly, Winder. J. Lynch, : M. Ryan, A. Whlttakcr, J. Gallagher, G. ißobinson, A. Julian and P. Brady, was taken, after which the further hearing was ■ adjourned until Mondny next, at 7.30 p.m. The victories of Soultllne have evidently caused Messrs Twohill and Deeble to think of his dam, and information reaches mc that the young Thames sportsmen cabled ' across during the week and purchased Castoiline. Although the actual price pnid has not transpired, it is understood that a substantial figure was paid for the mare's ' poscession, which was effected with a guarantee that she was in foal to Soult. An unusual incident happened In the Flaxmere Hack Handicap at Hastings last week. The totalisator was still open when the horses had reached the home bend, and the owner of the second horse entered a protest on the ground that the race was started before time. It transpired, however, that Piper was very exact in getting his field away, but was not before the advertised time, and the stewards decided ■ there was no ground for a protest. Two of tbe journalists accompanying the American Fleet paid a visit to the West Australian Turf Club's racecourse while at ' Perth, and in response to a toast one of 1 them said that racing in New York State had been dealt a severe blow by the authorities with the new betting laws, not because racing was harmful, but because It had been reduced to a shocking state by gamblers, who cared nothing for the sport itself. Such a state of affairs could never be reached in Australia while they continued to carry it on as at present. Private information received from Mr W. Lyons confirms the cabled account of the purchase of Aeolus by the Auckland sportsman. My Lyons was notified that the horse was for sale for 200gs (with a small contingency), as they were weighing out for the race, and the purchase was ratified and the transfer made in the space of twenty minutes, and a few minutes afterwards old friend Bill had the satisfaction of seeing his new acquisition roll home a winner, which his pluck well deserved. Aeolus has ' been placed in P. Nolan's charge. The foalings at Cambria Park are now complete, the last to enrich the Turf being Dreamland, dnm of Elyslan, etc., which has foaled""a filly to Obligado. In all 16 foalsnine fillies and seven colts —are at the Papatoitoi estate as follows:—To Soult: Miss Annie, a colt. To Eton: Anadyomene aud Cyrcnalca, fillies. To Obligado: Kiteroa, The Dell, and Crecy, colts; and Guinevere, Sprite, Dreamland, and Cytherea, fillies. To Hierarch: Tournament, Gwenlad, and Lute, colts; and Peace, To Huinga, and Senga, , fillies. Sir Joseph Carruthers, ex-Premier of New ■ South Wales, who has just returned from a ' visit to England, describes the English i Derby as the greatest picnic race meeting on earth. It is the sporting holiday of Englishmen. They attend in hundreds of thousands for this huge picnic. Perhaps ' 95 per cent see little or nothing of the racing; in fact, it is impossible; except to a select few, to see the Derby from start to finish. But a small matter like that does not affect the modern Englishman, who goes for the sake of the picnic, and to say he has .been there, and if be is much interested 1 In sport be can read, all about it in the papers next moraine.

The following foalings are announced from Glenora Park: — Mr J. McNiccol'a Mies Lottie, filly to Soult; and the came owner's Scotch Thistle, a filly to (iluteii. A case of interest to 'booimakers ana the public was decided at Marton on Thursday. A man named Broughton backed 'Frisco straight out at the recent Marton races, and when that horse won he collected £113 from several of the bookmakers before it was known a protest was entered for inconsistent running. He was then asked to refund the money but refused to do so, ana two detectives threatened to remove him from the course. Broughton then deposited the money with the club's secretary, and as 'Frisco's suspension was later removed, the present proceedings were taken against the Marton Club to recover the amount. The S.M. considered Broughton was certainly entitled to have the money back, and gave judgment for. £113 with costs. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. ACCEPTAITOES AND GENERAL ENTRIES. Mr. Falrle's b c Bayardo, by Bay Ronald Galicia 1 ■ Sir Daniel Cooper's br f Vivid, by St. Frusquin—Glnre 2 - Mr. W. Raphael's b c Blankey, by FlyFox—Tagale 3 ; TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. (By Telegraph.—Special to the Star.) CHRISTCIIURCH, this day. [ Two prominent Riccartou-traincd New , Zealand Cup candidates, in Bonny Glen and St. Joe, have lately been exhibiting signs . of lameness, and it is extremely doubtful if either will be able to take part in the big two-mile handicap. ' Mr. J. C. N. Grigg's pair of Cup candlL dates. Fandango and Outlander, have been withdrawn from that event. ' The Canterbury Jockey Club has decided that the attendance of young children at ' Rlccnrton, which of late has been on the increase, is not desirable. To remedy this it has been decided to make the full charges for juveniles at future meetings to any • part of the grounds. Private advice has been received that Mr. J. Buchanan is, at length, tired of that expensive failure, Noctuiiorm, and has " decided to dispose of him by auction. It Is " reported that a Wellington sportsman has ; cabled Mr. Buchanan a substantial offer 1 for the son of Multiform and La Notte, in- • tending to put him to the stud. By his victory in the Racing Club Hnnrtl- • cap on the second day of the Napier Park ' meeting. Moral has incurred a five pounds . penalty for the New Zealand Cup, bringing - his weight up to S.IO. Probable has also earned a seven pounds penalty as the out- - come of his victories at Ashburton, Gerald- ■ ine, and Duuediu. 1 Mr. 11. P. Nieolls' pair. Cross Bnttery • and Sen King have been nominated for several events at the V.R.C. meeting, which , would make it look as if they - will exploit that fixture, instead of , returning for the New Zealand , Cup meeting. It is to be hoped that Mr. , Nicoll wJll have better luck nt Melbourne . than that experienced by him at Kandwick. l Cricuton's N.Z. Cup chance may be put out of consideration, as he has gone lame again, and in not likely to stand a preparntlon. The Multiform colt Benetorm, in the same stable is also believed to be amlas. \ It is to be hoped that there is nothing 1 seriously wrong with the latter, as he has given Indications that if fit and well he would be a good winner. The latest addition to J. Rutledge's tenm Is a fine upstanding tbree-yeur-old colt by ■Stepnlak from Gipsy Countess, a sister to the New Zealand Cup winner. Grand Rapids. He is called Grand View, and now looks a very promising bargain at 22 guineas, which was paid for him as a yearliug. Jack Ashore, bearing signs of thorough 3 Mistering. Is again an active member of J. Rutledge's team at Wingatui. In addition to Grand View, the colt by Stepniak— Gipsy Countess, mentioned elsewhere. Rutledge has another stranger in bis team, In " the shape of Invincible, a brown, by Conqueror from a Lady Spencer mare, b.v First I Lord from Quickstep, by Apremout from the Traducer mare Becky Sharp. Since Optional joined R. Ellis' stable, the colt has improved, and is now shaping well !on the track. Optional derived his name from the fact that his owner nud breeder was found guilty of a breach of the Licensing Act, and a verdict of £50 or three ' montlis was an option which created the ■ name. Optional was got by Casket from Offchance, n daughter of Foul Shot, which was a useful sort in moderate company. ' Probable registered an attractive perform- • once by winning the MosgJcl Handicap at the Duncdln Jockey Club's spring meeting, ; for boring before getting the stake. This 1 is the third consecutive race the son of The Possible has won this season, and no hors -, " will strip fitter than he when the New • Zealand Cup comes on for decisiou. True. ' he has not as yet beaten anything ap--0 proaching Cup form, and it Is probably on • this account that his chance is not greatly r favoured by backers. ; - Vladimir, the two-year-old son of Pll - grim's Progress and Tsaritza, showed up l! 1 n favourable light by winning a double s: 1 the D..T.C. meeting, and his victories werr- •- well anticipated in various betting centres t Another dunl winner was the Euroclydo: gelding Leonardo, who aecoiinted for both hurdle races in most convincins style. Th> ■■ North Island sportsman, Mr H. Whitney V had three with Snjrn and Demj. thi' j latter of which proved herself to hn by fur y the best two-year-old seen out at the meet .. Ing by accounting for the Dunedln Stake* c and the Dominion Handicap. The opposition was anything but strong in either !- event, but the decisive way in which the ~ daughter of Stepniak and Conronne won i- stamped her as a filly of considerable pro mlse.

A prominent Stewards' Handicap candidate in Lmpulite' showed a glimpse of his best form by romping over the quartet that opposed him in the Shorts Handicap, while ■Sweet Angelus let her party down badly by finishing second to Dabchick In the Electric Handicap. The concluding day of New; Brighton Trotting Club's meeting was a great success from every standpoint, the weather being fine, the attendance very large, and the racing of a »ost interesting nature. Despite the opposition of 10 bookmakers, the tote was well patronised, the total investments for the meeting reaching £10,748, as against £9971 last year. A high-class field of nine harness horses, all capable of going two miles in 4.55 or better, contested the Mace Memorial Stakes, Fusee and Discoverer being elected favourites. Nor were the public astray in their selection, for the pair fought out a great finish. Fusee just getting his big opponent down iv the last 50 yards. Miss Burlington and Terra Nova, both of whom are susceptible to considerable improvement, finished close up, third and fourth, while St. Simon, reeling off bis first mile at a great pace, tired to nothing. The 3 miles Spring Handicap attracted 14 competitors, Decoration, who had the services of A. Priugle in the saddle, being served up a very strong favourite. For over two miles it looked as if Decoration could not lose, but then he tired badly, and eventually went all to pieces. Victory .rested with Implore, which, despite a penalty of 7 sees, through an earlier win In the Advance Handicap, scored with a little to spare in the creditable time of 7.41. Shangant, a recent importation from Australia, showed greatly Improved form by running into second place, but none of "the back markers were ever dangerous. Robert Emmet bad .a very easy task set him in winning the Brookton Handicap, and it was painfully evident that several of the unplaced division in this event were not anxious to attract the judge's notice. The consistent little Verax put up another smart performance, by winning the final handicap from scratch in 2.20, after running round a good sized field. The Heir actually finished first, but was disqualified lor starting before his time. Another of Mr Buckland's reps, in Vitella accounted for the Shlrlej Handicap, registering what is by far her beat performance since coming to New Zealand. The Telegraph Handicap went to the wildwood pony Joy, which, after being- passed by Hlnau, outstayed that geldlug, and just struggled home a length in front of The Heir, who was undoubtedly the unlucky horse ef the meeting. THE TAURIKI CASE. (To the Editor.) Sir.-With reference to the case of the mare Taurikl, into which the Takapuna Jockey Club appears to be holding a decidedly elongated inquiry, without being able to reach any finality, and Id view of j the multifarious rumours that are in the air i concerning the past career of the said niarc, ! I consider that in justice to her owner, Mr O runt, and also to myself, I should lay thf : plain facts before you, in order that your renders may be able to judge whether the Takapuna Jockey Club is justiucd in the : action that it has taken up. These facts I ran be put in a nutshell. Firstly, 1 bred i and broke the mare myself at Tauranga. Secondly, I sold her to Mr Grant last December. Thirdly, she has never raced under any nnnae except that of Tauriki. 1 may ndd that I am willing to forfeit the sum of one hundred pounds (£100) to any charitable institution that the Takapunn Jockey Club may name, if that club, or any other club or persons, can prove that th» facts stated above nrc not true, or that 1 have at any time been involved in any shady or dishonourable transactions. TTuslInt that this direct challenge will be sufficient to persuade the Taknpunn Jockey Club to at once come to a decision in the matter one way or another. —I am, etc., SAM DARRAGH, Breeder of Taurikl. Tauranga.
