UNREQUITED LOVE.
THE LAST RESORT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. In the Magistrate's Court torday i young man named James Milnes was charged with having attempted to take his life, by shooting, at Dullington, oa , the 15th inst. Accused came from Yorkshire, and has been in the Dominion about a year. H? attended a wedding on Tuesday, and considered that he had )ieen slighted by a girl with whom he w?a in love. Thu so depresesd him that/he became melancholy.. A letter addressed to the girl was found on accused, telling her of his infatuation, and declaring fliat she had brokfen his heart, and that he intended to kill himself. The magistrate severely admoaisbed the accused for his foolish act, but considered that, as he had only a slight wound on his arm, he had not really intended to take his life, but rather had intended to frighten the girl, and create a stir. As he was a young man. only 21 years of age, his Worship said he would not send him to gaol, but would Femand him for a week to the Samaritan Home, and if at the end of that time the Court received favourable reports, he would be discharged.
