SOUTH AFRICAN UNITY.
CONVENTION OPENED. MESSAGE FROM THE KING. DURBAN, October 13. The National Convention which has j been summoned to draft a scheme of closer union has begun its sittings at Durban, Sir Henry De Villiers having been elected president. King Edward's message to the Convention expressed deep interest in its proceedings, and conveyed cordial good wishes for the success of the deliberations, which His Majesty was confident would be ani- j mated by the whole-hearted desire and; unswerving efforts of the delegates for the common good of South Africa. The Imperial Government's message was equally hopeful.
