Widespread sympathy is felt throughout the Wafcato- (telegraphs our Hartllton correspondent), with Mr John Gordon, formerly of Woodlands, in*the death of his wife, which occurred at tha Opoia Nursing Home yesterday afternoon. Deceased was taken suddenlyill on Friday week, and an operation for an acute' foi*in of" appendicitis was performed the following Monday. "Mrs Gordon never rallied, and suffered great agony. Deceased was a daughter of the late Dr Elms ley, .of Auckland. Tho funeral took place..this afternoon. - Mr W. fl. Montgomery, president of the Canterbury Society of Arts, at a; meeting of the Council on Friday, made feeling reference to the death of the lata Mr Charles Kidson. He said that six months _go -Mr Kidson appeared to stand on the threshold of-_" brilliant career. His abilities as a sculptor had obtained, recognition throughout the Dominion, and all lovers-of art had viewed with satisfaction the rise of a New Zealand artist who could create statues which would compare favourably with similar work in other parts of the world. Montgomery congratulated the Society on being the possessor of "A Daughter of Eve," one; of Mr Kidson's finest pieces of work, and expressed "the opinion that hisfame as afi"artist would continue- ia increase after his Montgomery moved a vote of sympathy ,fof; .^ : Mrs Kidson and her family, and it was carried. . ~
