Towns, of Australia, ex-champion of the -world, and Ernest Barry, nephew o f W. A. Barry, rowed on the Thames course, from Putney to Morttake, 4 miles 400 yards, this afternoon. The Australian -was defeated, Barry winning comfortably by a length and anslt. GKEAT ENTHUSIASM. " (Received 22.15 p.m.) LONDON, October 12. _ The race was rowed against a strong tide. Barry, -who had the Surrey side, the river, -won easily in 21 mm. 12 2-5 sec. Thousands thronged the banks ! of the river, and there was great enthusiasm at the Englishman's win.
