WARRNAMBOOL ROAO RACE.
304 STARTERS. MELBOURNE, October 4. Australia's premier cycling event, the Duijdop road race from- Warrnatabool to Melbourne (165 miles), took place on Saturday, and resulted as follows:— J. T. Donohue (N.S.W.), 47 mm. 1 W. Rennie (Victoria) 2 Sargeatit (Victoria) 3 Three hundred and four competitors started, and there were several accidents, but none of a very serious character. The Australasian road championship (fastest time) was won by M. Chappell (Victoria), who started from scratch,and occupied 7 hours 46 minutes 27 seconds. Donohue's time was 8 hours 38 sees. Chappell won the event in 1902 when, with 55 mm. start, he covered the distance in 9 hours 0 mm. 3 sees. ■ ■ There were 330 acceptors for the race, 9 each from New Zealand and New South Wales, five from South Australia, 6 from Tasmania, and 4 from Westralia. An idea of the big task the Dunlop Company had on hand in feeding the contestants can be gathered from the following list of food supplies distributed at the different foods depots en route: — 107 gallons milk, 220 dozen oranges, 220 dozen bananas, 1751b muscatel raisins, 1701b chocolate, 121b Bovril, 1121b meat and rabbit jelly, 751b Plasmon biscuits (softened in hot milk), 501b sugar, 181b Plasmon cocoa, 70 bunches 25 dozen eggs, and 301b of bread. Over 40 Dunlop officials, in addition to local assistance, were engaged along the route, attending to feeding and checking arrangements. The limit division left Warrnambool at 5.50, and the scratch trio, T. Larcombe, R. Morgan, and M. Chappel, at 7 o'clock.
